Sorry big kev - that's illegal - Customs & Excise will come down on you like a ton of bricks if they catch you. Red diesel is reserved for strictly non road use - farm vehicles and plant.

Cheers

There are plenty of dyes available.

Hi All,

I've done a couple of seaches on the forum about this, but given the recent discussion on PPO/Biodiesel/Veg oil, and reading that some folks are using 33% mix or 55% mix of veg oil to fossil diesel on other cars, I just wanted to confirm whether anyone was using veg oil in their Galaxy, either from purified recycled veg oil, or straight out of the container from a supermarket.

I've got a Mk1 TDi (110 bhp engine) - it's not the PD engine. I'm seriously interested in going the veg oil route, but don't want to screw the engine up! So, anyone using a veg oil mix on their Mk1 diesel (NOT PD engine)? If so, for how long (mileage/time) and is there a major difference in performance or fuel economy?

cheers,

Phillip

Thanks Seatkid for you honest opinion , just carried out an experiment with my own mpg on GAS just to see if i have been working this out wrong since the conversion anyway for what it is worth here are my findings as follows : Tank empty alarm sounds on 322 miles , this was full to brim with 62 litres

Fills tank to max again with 62 litres ( 12.4 gallons)

322miles / 12.4 gallons equates to 25.96 miles per litre of gas

Price of diesel in my area 97.8 pence/litre (

Please see above post , once the conversion has payed for !

This post was initially aimed at nothing more than to make other petrol owners aware of the possible savings to be had if they so decided to go gas and yes all that i am really concerned with was the

So long as you're satifisfied that OK by me.

A few things though, I personally average 53mpg which I "guess" up to approx 60% of which is town driving - but I don't expect others to average that as "town driving" can vary from a quick flit in/out of a town at night, to being stuck in a big city commute every day. (whats the average consumption of petrol vs diesel when stood idling in traffic?)

Also LPG is 49.5p per litre around here and diesel 93.9p per litre.

Are you "cherry picking" your figures to make a case? And ignoring things like conversion/maintenance/insurance costs?

Fuel costs are but a small part of overall costs of running a car for most people - about 20 to 25% of total costs for a Galaxy - unless you like to run around in an old banger.

Anyway, I am so convinced by your arguements that I am taking delivery of a new car on Saturday......

...plus you need a new battery in your calculator

40mpg at 97.8p/litre works out at 11.1p per mile not 12.2p

(53mpg at 93.9p/litre works out at 8.1p per mile and 25.96mpg at 49.5p/litre works out at 8.7p per mile)

Just the type of stuffy old i,m right your wrong reply i should of expected really , as long as your satisfied then thats ok ? READ the post fuel prices will vary throughout the uk.Asked YOU for an average mpg TOWN ONLY and YOU quoted 38-40 average . Cherry picking to make a case now thats just nasty NO and not mentioning conversion cost , people read the posts ONCE THE CONVERSION HAS PAYED FOR ITSELF .Town driving can vary agreed but what has Diesel against petrol in traffic got to do with anything ? , Maintenance and insurance , my maintenance if anything is less and my insurance is

No, its not a skoda.....but it does 100mpg (rounded up)

Fuel Economy.

2.0l & 2.3l LPG conversions cost about 7.5 to 8p per mile

2.8 LPG costs about 10.5p per mile

1.9 TDI costs about 10p per mile.

Assuming best case for LPG 7.5p per mile and Diesel at 10p per mile.

And assuming cost of conversion at

THANK GOD FOR THAT!

The good old lie detector! mate i get more than 53 mpg on my lie detector. but never get that in real life.

this has been a very interesting thread to watch (and participate in - a little).

There are days when, after having been on here and seen some of the mpg's quoted, I am convinced that our Gal is a pile of sh*te because it only returns 23 mpg (40 odd equivalent on gas).

However I now feel much better. The car still only does the same MPG - but I know I am not kidding myself - we do not have a lie detector fitted. My mpg is worked out based upon filling the tanks to the absolute brim (petrol or LPG) and noting the mileage when we next fill up - at the same pump!

OK - so you might still think I own a pile of sh*te. But I can now stop worrying that there is something wrong with it. It runs very smooth and goes like stink (for a bus!).

Thank you - all has been revealled!!

And if I was buying another one - I'd buy petrol again and have it converted to LPG!!

Cheers

Steve

That may well be with yours gio, but I checked mine regularly over the first 20,000 miles and found it to be accurate +/- 3%. Also checked speed/distance calibration found speedometer < 3mph optimistic up to 75 mph and odometer accurate as near as dammit. Used my firm's GPS gear as reference.

Unusual, granted.

And I get 800 miles per tank......

Let's face it, some guy's are born with a special touch.....ask my wife

My Skoda's speedometer is on the other hand a full 10% high over its range and its fuel trip computer is between 5 - 10% optimistic

To get this thread back on track, can I re-iterate that johnswlondon original (1st) post is excellent advice.

8. anticipate road conditions, needless braking is wasted fuel

This is particularly important.
