mumof4 Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 Specially if they have long hair!! Head Lice Yup...i know this is a forum of big burly blokes with egos the size of america..but i want to talk head lice..now you may have to enlist the Mrs help here..and if she asks why..just say you are showing an interest in whatever crawls on your daughters head.If you dont want to enlist the Mrs help..then have a gander on the net so you know exactly what im talking about. Now..what i would like to know..is what treatment do you use in the home???and which do you think is the best. Reason i ask is because with having 3 of the little darlings, it is something that crops up every other week or so in this house.Usually i sit and comb conditioner through their hair then comb the suffocated little beggers out (Lice i mean). I have tried various different medications/lotions/creams etc for this but there are some on the market that i cannot use on my daughters hair because of hers and mines asthma. Most treatments are very expensive...and i do find it very effective to use the methods i use. Soo...c'mon peeps...its the school hols..the time to try and delouse the kids just in time to send em back to school for the whole cycle to begin again!! Quote
teresa Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 tea tree oil is good they dont like that i also used to use the conditioner treatment everyday for a week combing them out of all the kids hairs ( very time consuming when theres 7 kids plus you and o/h) as treated them all even if someone didn,t have even me and o/h were treated it did work but you have to persevere with it also tie hair up whilst at school that also helps been a while since mine had them as it seamed to occur mostly at infant school Quote
KellyJo Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 Maz, Luckily we have only had the dreaded nits once, about 6 mths ago. I was fortunate to catch it very early on as i had been forewarned by our daughters friend's mum that they were lurking in the classroom! I combed every day for a week and used 'lyclear' once and thankfully they were eradicated and haven't shown their ugly faces since! Just as a precaution we made her go to school with hair tied back until she decided she would rather have it cut shorter. I was not impressed by the school though who took weeks to put up posters in classrooms to bring it to the attention of parents, by which time of course it was around the whole school, did feel sorry for the teachers though, must be awful working closely with kids that you know have them had to laugh when her teacher suddenly started wearing her hair up!! Now i just check weekly which she doesn't mind - must be a nightmare with three though, don't envy you that task!!! Got to go and have a good scratch now, feel itchy just thinking about it ^_^ kj xx Quote
mumof4 Posted August 7, 2007 Author Report Posted August 7, 2007 Have you ever used Hedrin i think it is??A newish one on the market that has the consistancy of oil..that is pretty good aswell as odourless which is an added bonus....but depending where you buy it..it can be pretty expensive. Quote
morticiaskeeper Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 We use Hedrin and it seems to work well. The biggest problem is getting the not so little darling to give a damm :-) Setting up the clippers and a chair in the kitchen, then coaxing her into the room seemed the best way, the shower didn't know what had hit it over the next week!! sparky Paul Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 (edited) Using a tea tree oil conditioner regularly seems to help keep them at bay. It's not going to be 100% effective, but our two have never had them... yet... ^_^ The Hedrin treatment is non-chemical, it works by coating and suffocating the little blighters - should be better for anyone likely to react to any of the chemical treatments. It's supposed to be very effective. Edited August 7, 2007 by sparky Paul Quote
gregers Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 maz its not just girls,my youngest too get them regularly eldest 1 has never really suffered with them,it really bugs(no pun)us that i will spend time denitting them only to find they keep getting them because of the lazy sods of parents who do not check there own kids hair,it feels like your fighting a losing battle, but were using headrin seems to work fairly quickly and our doctors are putting it on prescription,so if you dont ask you dont get, otherwise its quite expensive when you have to keep doing it every couple of weeks. mumof4 Posted August 7, 2007 Author Report Posted August 7, 2007 your lucky..docs here wont put anything on prescription as it is so rife here. My kids can be clear..go to school or out to play..check their hair and they are crawling with live adults!!..it beggers belief that some parents dont check their kids hair or treat their kids.ive used Hedrin as it is very effective..but my kids were coming home nearly everyday with more after they were clear in the morning..it was costing me a fortune so i turned to useing conditioner which seems to work just aswell. BadHair Posted August 7, 2007 Report Posted August 7, 2007 My boys keep getting nits too - I find the conditioner and combing method works best. Expensive lotions and potions do nothing except provide a breeding modification challenge for the genetically minded nit. It's time consuming, boring and makes your skin crawl, but at least you know you've got rid of the little beggars. Nits, that is. The children keep coming back :o Quote
Smilge Posted August 8, 2007 Report Posted August 8, 2007 A number one haircut with the clippers does the trick followed by a good washing ........ the secret is not to use shampoo but ....REAL POO!!! Nits only like clean hair so why not? ...... they tend not to have many freinds though! Quote
mumof4 Posted August 8, 2007 Author Report Posted August 8, 2007 Nits are actually the egg caseings..they are actually head lice.lol.. Bleeno..your tip is as ever..very helpfull.lol. Quote

MadBaz Posted August 8, 2007 Report Posted August 8, 2007 Regular use of Head and Shoulders and conditioner and the comb seems to keep them at bay, after a bad outbreak don't forget to wash bedding. Had probs with my ex not keeping up to daughters hair, not very nice when you and others can see the buggers from a distance in supermarket. After I'd combed out over 150, I gave them to ex in an envelope and said "take these to chemist and get yourself 150 bottles of lotion!" She seems to have got the message, scruffy cow. Just need her to do something about occasional flea bites on kids now. SS and the courts believe my kids are well looked after too :( Quote

Bigjeeze Posted August 8, 2007 Report Posted August 8, 2007 Mrs BJ is a Nurse and used to work in the RCN Children's bit - She helped to devise and run the Bug Buster campaign and worked with some of the country's leading Clinicians on this very subject. Medical opinion has it that chemical intervention is pointless , the only sure way is to continuously check and comb using conditioner and a lice comb. Lice combs don't just get the little monsters they get the egg cases too - If you don't get the egg caes then you get new monsters!! Personally I favour telling the kids they have the dreaded lurgi and will fart themselves to death unless I shave all their hair off (but then that's because I don't have any little children and I am a rotten sod!!)
