Hi

Got the new Gal today.

It's a 2.0 tdci Ghia

I've had a look at the rear quarter windows and there are no handles so I assume they are electric. Question is, how do they operate ? Where's the switch ??

Can't look in the onwers guide as Ford have had to order one due to car not being supplied with one !

Cheers in advance

Look on the control panel, where the climate control is. To the left of the panel there should be a couple of switches for the rear door window winders and below them are the switches for the rear quarter vents. They open and close very slowly mind. Give it a whirl. All mod cons ay!

Hi Phil,

There is nothing there. Just the climate control switches.

They must be electric as there are no handles on them at all. There is the small cowling covering the plug for the heated glass element, and a larger moulded cowling across the top which I assume is covering the opening mechanism.

ANy other ideas ?

Yes - looking at the price list, you have to pay extra to get opening rear windows, so if the mechanism wasn't fitted when the car was being built, they don't open!

Hi Ivor,

I have the Ford Galaxy brochure which states that opening rear quarter windows are standard on the Ghia with optional electronic function.

If i push gently on the window from inside the car, you can tell they are not fixed.

Thanks anyway.

I noticed in the Mk3 brochure that the electric opening of the rearmost side windows would only be available in the second half of 2006 so its possible yours was built before that but have a gander at this thread: http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.php?showtopic=11567

try a PM to one of the other Mk3 owners who might have a look in their handbooks and let you know where the switches are supposed to be. :) Andy.

I have a MkIII galaxy 2.0 Ghia registered in Jan 07, I remember asking the question when we picked up the car and the salesman saying that the quarter vents are not available on the latest gALAXY, I will double check tonight but I am pretty sure that they are not on my Car. I have just looked on Fords website and downloaded the latest brochure which shows that electrically operated rear vents are an option on the zetec and Ghia and not standard.

Hi Wazza

It's the latest brochure I have, which states that opening vents are Standard but Electronically operated ones are optional, which to me means that the windows are meant to open one way or another.

There is a significant bulged cowling across the top of the glass, which can surely only be the opening mechanism, and as I mentioned earlier, if I push on the glass from inside the car, it clearly moves and is not a "fixed" pane.

I'm off to the dealer right now to see if they have my missing manual. I'll see if they can help.

After visiting the dealer, I was told that the information in the Brochure was now false.

The idea was for them to open originally, but in order for the car to keep it's Thatcham Category 1 status for security, Ford had to do away with the possibility of opening rear quarter vents.

Shame that....

On the owners manual, I was given a new pack, only to get back home to find that they had given me a manual for a MKII.

So..... It's another visit to Evans Halshaw AGAIN on Monday.

Thanks for all you help guys

Much appreciated.

so they dont open! but you are able to push them and they move as they are not a fully fixed part! jeez I'm glad to the build quality has improved now that Ford are totally responsible for it!

the all new singing and dancing mk3 Galaxy, seats seven in discomfort, able to carry and tow less, but more secure unless you press on the right window!

Sounds like a load of b0llocks to me, what has the fact that the rear windows open got to do with security?

So long as they are closed, they are just like the other 4 opening windows. And if they werent secure, they should have been modified not removed.

I hope they offered you a little recompense. after all the product supplied was not as expected/specified.

Get yourself back to the dealer and tell them you are not happy that the product supplied (car) was not as specified (rear windows did not open) and that you expect a little ass licking in the form of free servicing or accesories to compensate you for your loss. after all if they have supplied you with a product that is less well equipped than that which you ordered, you have been short changed.

Hi I have a 2004 tdi Ghia. It has only offside opening quarter light. The switch is just to the right of the gear lever. A way of testing to see if it should open is to unlock the car by turning and holding the key, this should also open all windows, that do open!

aye that should work! but as the OP is asking about the new all singing and dancing Mk3 that wont work! as it been deduced that the rear quarter lights dont open :( but on the up side the seats fold flat ^_^

No joy with dealer.

Have now waited a further 7 days for MKIII owners manual, and had heard nothing today, so I rang (twice) and was eventually told that it was still on order.

As they have other NEW Galaxy's on site, I can't understand why they can't get one from one of those.

I have had to post another question here, as without this manual, I can't explain what is happening. - (See "lights flicker every 60 seconds when parked and locked")

If you have electric rear quarter lights in a MkIII the switches are up on the headlining next to the front interior lights. I have a Sep 06 version and they weren't available as an option then, although I read at the time that they would be available later. When I picked the car up I got the same story that they were not included for security reasons (fair enough if it is true). However, the windows are in fact just fixed in a closed position. They are not sealed and as others have said they will move against the rubber seals if pushed. I assume therefore that they will be hinged at the front and just fixed at one point at the rear - I can't say I am fully convinced of the enhanced security ?

Having said all that, I don't think opening rear quarter windows are worth worrying about - I very rarely used them in previous Galaxies I had.

if its any use my new Gal has powered rear windows and the switches are on the roof console next to the courtesy lights, they are slow to open/close but there appears to be an electrical element on the glass on the nearside so maybe this is something to do with security?!

Hi I know this is an old tread but I fell on it looking for the same answers as I had just bought a used Galaxy Zetec 2007 and could not open the rear quarter windows.

The user manual clearly shows 2 methots of opening the windows. Either maunually with a lever mechanism or electrically. The switches for the electric method should be mounted either side of the front courtesy lamp however they are not there. My windows too have the cowling on the rear edge, no lever, therfore I must conclude that there is in fact no way of opening the windows. As to the security argument, well what a load of old tosh!

Nice one Ford, perhaps a steerinig wheel that does not turn the wheels as the next cutting edge design feature ?
