Just got back from the local garage and all is not well... ;)

Failed on:

Reg plate lamp, they do work but not very bright.

nsr/osr indicator lamps, incorrect colour. (wtf)

nsf cv gaiter split.

nsr & osr brake pipes corroded

CO content at idle excessive (2.46%)

CO content at fast idle excessive (1.44%)

advisory for:

nsf & osf brake hose slightly deterioted

front (to rear) brake pipe slightly corroded

He forgot to add slight play on osf wheel bearing

I could fix most of these but I'm worried about the CO emissions, could replacing the cat solve this or are the readings too high for it to be the cat? I don't think the ign system is at fault otherwise the HC would be high too and it's well below the fail rate. Is using super plus unleaded a factor? or does it indicate a more serious underlying problem, like burning oil?

all help much appreciated

i know on mine if the Co reaadings are high it could be the lambada sensor (oxygen sensor) dont know if its different on the gal ;)

not sure about lambda as it's reading at 1.01, mot tester said it could be cht sensor.

give it a mini service, plugs, oil change, airfilter and an italian tune up! give it a real good run to clear out its lungs then if that fails Lamda sensor, OE part! copies are shite and can cause more problems! then check the oporation of the secondary air pump? and did they get it up to the correct temp before they tested it?

mini service done, italian tune done b4 it went in, it was up to temp. Secondary air pump is on council tip as it was u/s, I didn't think it had anything to do with emmisions, only to warm the cat up!

just had the same thing with high co ,had to fit a bulb & holder in place of the air pump ,the management system has to sense a load there on start up or it wont let the lambda sensor switch ,

Shoysty I owe you a drink, it passes emissions perfectly. I've fitted a bulb for now and will stick a resistor in there permanently. Not a bad fix for Edited by MADBAZ

I forgot to add: the local garage, Aspley Autos, did the Oil & Filter, Test, rear brake pipes and bulbs and of course the re test all in for

Thats certainly good to know, a lot of people on here have had emission related MOT failures with 2.0 Galaxy's, and the last time I suggested the secondary air pump I got the distinct impression i was being laughed at!

Anyone know what wattage bulb is required for this trick to work?

I have already wasted money on a Cat to get mine through and wanted to try this (as my pump has failed) before changing the lambda sensor.

Thanks,

James

So I had a closer look at the secondary air pump and confirmed the motor is open circuit but while I was looking I found the bottom half of the "secondary air injection switching valve" (description from the Haynes manual) has fallen off (surely this can't be good)!

Does anyone think it will be OK to blank it off at the EGR pipe?

PS: Anyone know what the pipe on top of the switching valve does?

BTW I bought my 2.0 GLX new in 1995 and this is its first MOT failure. but thats not to say I haven't been a frequent reader of this forum to resolve its various idiosyncrasies.

Hello All,

after reading the the forum as my fuel economy is naff, I decided to check my secondary air pump. Will it be obvious that its running when you 1st start her up ?? as she dont seem to be.I have read about disconecting the pump wires and fitting a bulb and holder instead of the pump, is this a straight forward 12v indicator bulb for example?? just so i can try it to see if fuel economy is better before i get a replacement pump.

ps i take it the pump is between the rocker cover and battery, with a pipe going down to manifold ?

Thanks

Dave
