hi im a newbie from sunny blackpool,i have recently brought my first galaxy a 1996 2.0 glx and have a few problems with it ,firstly coming back home on the motorway i noticed everynow and then the engine lacked power and struggled up hills ,when on tick over the revs kept shooting up and down up to 1000 rpm but i found a sensor had come of ,i put it back on and the revs are staying where they should be but it seems like its having trouble running on all 4 on tick over, secondly the central locking dont work on the rear drivers door ,the interior lights stay on after i put the fuse back in but i think ive found that problem as one of the door switches is broke so ill replace that and see how it goes, the passenger electric window dosent work from passenger side or drivers side but with a reply off nik i will hopefully sort that out as i have been told to check the wires in the rubber by the door pillar, and the mpg dont seem that good as i drove 100 miles back and it used about

!

Cue all the "should of got a TDi" wisecracks

Should of got a TDI  ..

Seriously though, I did less than 3500k in the year ive owned it, I couldn't justify putting an extra grand in an equivalent condition tdi just for our run about second car.

Maybe when i get rid of the mondeo I'll look for a new(ish) Gal and replace the old Gal with a smaller car.

I had similar power probs, it felt like the bus was struggling to get anywhere and it sounded like a TDI  , I've changed the plugs and air filter and I now run on super unleaded and everything seems fine. I was losing some power because the valve attached to the knackered secondary air pump was stuck open, sending some of the exhaust into the engine bay, thats been blanked off and the engine purrs nicely once again.

Just a footnote here; blanking off the air pump has also improved the brake and clutch pedal travel, anyone have any clue as to why?

given the age of the car and the problems with the rear central locking - I would look to the wiring in those doors as well - may even affect the interior lights

HI I am aslo a new member to this site and having a few problems with posting a queerie. Anyway I had a similar problem with losing power in an incline. I have 1.9 tdi Automatic 54. I had gearbox specialists look at it with no fault found, I had 3 yes 3 Ford dealerships look at it and one of them told me that I would need a new gearbox. WOW only

Im guessing that the sensor you found unplugged was the MAF sensor...

But anyhow here is a list of checks for you to do.

1. ISV located on top of the throttle body ( Take it off and clean it) then replace it.

2. Check for air leaks... Most obvious locations will be under the bonnet.

3. Replace your Fuel Filter if not done recently.

4. Drive your car with and without the MAF sensor plugged in if you notice any difference don't automatically think that the MAF is faulty like i did ( your first cheap replacement should be the o2 sensor that is bolted to the front pipe of your exhaust) Click Here For the one I used

The sensor wire that is on the MAF is also controlled by the o2 sensor, if your'e o2 sensor is faulty this would also explain your thought that you are getting a lack of MPG. The o2 sensor i listed above has wires colour coded exactly as they are on galaxys

thatll keep you busy for a few days let us know the results
