MadBaz Posted May 13, 2007 Report Posted May 13, 2007 I take it 500 of them miles was done on the back of a RAC wagon? Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted May 13, 2007 Report Posted May 13, 2007 I think you should check your next credit card statement for a mystery entry of about 100 Euros from a filling station in the vicinity of Paris. By my reckoning, You could just about manage this if you made the entire journey on tow while leaving the engine running to keep the brake servo active. Mind, it would be nice and, at a steady 50mph on the level in 6th gear with a strong tail wind, 80/90 mpg is just about possible. B) B) Quote
adrianf. Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 Id be happy to get that out of TWO tanks Quote
tdi90 Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007  Our 1999 TDi 90 galaxy does 540 miles to a full tank of derv. Ya must be running it in 2nd gear and no throttle everywhere B) . Quote

gregers Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 Shirley that must be kilometers??????????? Quote
El Dingo Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 It was a 2.3 not a diesel. Ha ha ah ah ahahhahahhhahahahahahhahahahahahahhah!!!!!!! ;) Quote
galaxytdi115 Posted May 14, 2007 Author Report Posted May 14, 2007 there is alittle valve just inside the filler tank, when the pump trigger shuts off cos its full, depress the button and all the exeess air in the tank comes out thus you can then get more fuel in < in my case an extra tenner nearly. only do this though if after you have filled up you are gonna do a few miles first cos you will suffer overspill from ya tank, dunno howmany litres but it cost me 89 quid to fill er up, cos im gettin on a bit i drive frugally and smooth an cautious cos them french drivers r mad and suicidal!!!! ;) Quote
Triple Trouble Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 "dnno how any litres but it cost me 89 quid" Today is not April the first is it by any cahnce? ;),. Now doing a quick bit of maths, assuming a price of 94p/l, I reckon that's almost 95 litres of Shell's finest pouring into a 70 litre tank!! Someone somewhere is being economical with the truth me thinks ;) Quote
mumof4 Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 Um..diesel is on average around 97.9 p/l...can be more.some places are 98.9... even so..that is 90 litres into a 70 litre tank!!..cant be right at all. Quote

Blimey, you must live in the wrong part of the country, for diesel at least ;) Even the likes of BP/Shell are 'only' charging 93.9, and unleaded is now more expensive in some petrol stations! Quote
mumof4 Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 but we are agreed on one thing..it is over 90 litres he put in the tank!!..how is that possible? Quote
adrianf. Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 (edited) Um.......................Its not possiblePut a 45 gallon drum in the boot fill it with derv and that should do the trick Edited May 14, 2007 by adrianf Quote
tim-spam Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 If we assume he bought the most expensive diesel and gets an extra tenner's worth by 'burping', that would mean around 80 litres in the tank (still a little doubtful, but let's continue anyway). The fuel light comes on with around 7 litres left, which would then equate to 1188 miles on 73 litres. This means he claims to have achieved around 74mpg - hmmmmm. However, if the odometer is reading in km instead of miles, this would mean he achieved around 46mpg, which is quite likely for a gently driven TDI. Perhaps a quick session with VAGCOM to reset the odometer to miles is in order..... Quote
Smilge Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 Tim ...I think you got it there matey ...... I was also wondering whether the odometer wasn't reset but your reason is more likely ..... Quote
Triple Trouble Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Theonly downside to the thoughts above is that the mileage to EDP from Manchester is approximately 1150, and he stated that he did the whole trip on one tank full!! Miles or km that is still unlikely without serious mods to the tank! I stil think its April 1st  Quote
mumof4 Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 I think the most anyone has got out of one full tank, is just over 600 miles..no way can you get over a thousand out of one humongously full tank!..you would have to have a tank that was double the normal size.Even at a quid a litre..the most expensive....thats 89 litres.which would equate to maybe an extra 150/200 odd miles out of the tank??(maths isnt good this time in the morning.)..which still leaves it short nearly 388 miles at the most??..def summit not right here. Quote
tim-spam Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Well, just to put the cat amongst the pigeons, my brother-in-law has just achieved over 65mpg in his TDI.... Quote
Smilge Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Yea and I can get 199 mpg from mine ..... that's what my trip computer tells me when I coast downhills ..... Quote
Smilge Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Well it is all downhill to France ..... Quote
