HullHornet#30 Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 Does anyone actually use premier fuels like BP ultimate and optimax over normal fuels for their gal?Is it really worth it? Quote
mumble_bee Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 (edited) depending on my wallet, I do sometimes go with the high octane fuels...there is definitely a feel of power and smoothness.... on the petrols at least. I reckon its worth a try... altho the fuel suppliers would rather you used it ALL the time.... edit: oh and on the mrs' audi (1.8 auto petrol) I use it quite regularly... noticeable difference... I cant speak for the economy however.. just the performance. Edited May 5, 2007 by mumble_bee Quote
Guest wolfie Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 (edited) My VW T5 loves BP ultimate http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/images/smilies/cloud9.gif filled up last week at the local Shell garage on their regular diesel and the top speed and pick up really dropped! took a few miles to get the umph back but a couple of fill ups and the difference is noticable one good thing about the 'special fuels' is the price! extra Necta points you get at every fill up :( ever better when your not paying for the fuel in the first place  Edited May 5, 2007 by wolfie Quote
El Dingo Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 Forget anything except standard 95 octane on the 2.3 Galaxy. It won't do anything, IMHO, except cost you more. My A4 diesel does 'seem' to run slightly smoother on Ultimate Diesel, but the fuel saving simply doesn't justify the 8p per litre premium. It runs well enough on any other forecourt diesel (apart from the horrible smell, clouds of carcinogenic smoke, noise and annoying power delivery and torque characteristics). I used to run a Seat Cupra R on Shell Optimax (98+ octane), and this really delivered! BP Ultimate didn't work as well on this car (97 octane). This engine was designed for 98 octane, so hardly suprising. Quote
mikeohope Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 Company I work for specifically tells company car drivers not to buy the premium rated fuel. It would make no odds to them as the fuel reclaim rate is fixed anyway. Quote
big_kev Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 Might make a very slight difference in performance to a highly tuned racing engine....something that will do above 7,000rpm.....otherwise no difference...its a con. Quote
mikej Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 In my opinion unless your car is already designed to run on or has been modded and remapped to benefit from the higher octane fuels you are doing nothing more than wasting your pennies , it makes no sense whatsoever to put a premium fuel in a bog standard car if the ecu is not mapped to accomidate to extra bang . Having run some big power motors in the past and spent all my spare cash on fuel i can honestly say thank god for a gassed galaxy @ 39.9p/litre. Quote

Having run some big power motors in the past and spent all my spare cash on fuel i can honestly say thank god for a gassed galaxy @ 39.9p/litre. This is absolutely right. Some engines, like the old 1.8T VAG engine I had in the Leon are designed to run on 98 octane. The 2.3 Gal engine is designed for 95 octane, so will not benefit from using 98 octane. Unless anyone knows any better? Who can quantify what benefit Ultimate Diesel has though? Cetane ratings? I understand that my Audi engine management limits boost pressure in the turbo via the variable vane angle. So even if the fuel burns more efficiently, the power output is 'restricted'. Ultimate does give me another 2 - 3 mpg (this car averages 42mpg) so at less than maximum boost I'm getting some benefit. Discuss!!! Quote
MadBaz Posted May 7, 2007 Report Posted May 7, 2007 I feel a slight difference in power (better pull up the hills around here) and slightly better economy when using 97 octane, esp on short trips, Miles to the Quote
tdi90 Posted May 7, 2007 Report Posted May 7, 2007 Not tried ultimate diesel in the Gal, but always used to use it in the Di vectra we had before. No difference in mileage but power was improved. The diesel from our local super market petrol station (starts with a T) is proper crap and I avoid it like the plauge! Quote
MrT Posted May 8, 2007 Report Posted May 8, 2007 My Galaxy handbook says I should use 98 octane fuel and "If the fuel available has a lower octane rating than that required by your vehicles, reduced engine performance and higher fuel consumption may result.". I normally use Sainsbury's Super Unleaded and that is only 97 Octane and there is a difference in performance. Also if you do use a lower octane fuel, the engine management system will compensate by retarding the timing etc. Quote

You'd be amazed at the difference an 'octane' can make... Quote
HullHornet#30 Posted May 12, 2007 Author Report Posted May 12, 2007 thanks plenty of fuel for thought. Does anybody use the cleaner additives like redex? Quote
tdi90 Posted May 13, 2007 Report Posted May 13, 2007 I dont use redex, but my garage where I have always taken our cars has a super duper injecter cleaner (cant remember the name of it). It's trade only, and I stick it in every 6 months. The galaxy had it's first dose when we brought it the other month, and it did make a difference to the smoke output, fuel consumption and its just felt smoother to drive pottering through town. It say's on the bottle that it increase's power. If it does, it's only a tiny amount and not really noticable. Quote
