neiluk Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 Hello all, My new 1999 2.3 galaxy has 215/55/r16 tyres. The rears are Matador Aquilla 97H Extra loads (730kg), which look like they have taken many corners Much too fast but are otherwise sound, but I'm concerned about my front tyres. These look relativly new but are Nankang Ultra Sport NS-II 93V (650kg) . No mention of Extra load but only 40kg less max load than a 95 rating tyre. I have read on this forum that New galaxy's have come with 93 tyres and other people have 94's on theirs, and the rating is for maximum load at maximum speed, so will my 93 tyres be OK at no more than 80 mph. Would you change the front tyres for budget 95's? As the tyres are in good nik, am I likely to find a buyer for my part worn 93's on Ebay etc ? I have V rated tyres on the front and H rated on the back. Is it OK/legal to mix speed ratings front and rear? Thanks for putting my mind at rest, Neil. Quote
mumof4 Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 yes you can mix speed ratings. I would change the fronts.must have reinforced or extra load, or in the case of an accident it may invalidate your insurance. 93?..IIRC that is too low. (I await to be corrected.lol) Quote
MadBaz Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 (edited) Shoud not have any less than a 95t reinforced tyre info in this post Edited April 29, 2007 by MADBAZ Quote
marinabrid Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 hi all just been looking at gals front tyres says 95T whats the t for and should it say reinforced on the tyre or not thanks Quote
mumof4 Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 T is the speed rating....it should say reinforced or Xtra load. Quote
mikeohope Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 usually says "extra load" or "reinforced" try this website http://www.mytyres.co.uk/start.html it has a tyre selector on it where you can select reinforced as a criteria. Quote
neiluk Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 Thank you all. I'm now convinced that for the safety of my family I'd better get them changed soon. I will take it gently until I do. I've just had a quick look on Ebay and these tyres looked good and are at a Very nice price for 2 and will allow me to go up to 168MPH!!!!! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/X2-NEW-TYRES-215-55-...1QQcmdZViewItem Would you buy them? Has anyone tried these tyres? If so do they grip well in the wet, wear well etc? Thanks for your opinions :-) Neil. Quote
mumof4 Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 Unless my eyes are decieving me..i cant see anywhere where it says they are reinforced/xtra load.Might be worth sending the seller a message... Quote
neiluk Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 Please can someone confirm that If a tyre has say a 95 to 97 load rating it will be Fine for a Galaxy even if it doesn't mention 'Extra Load/reinforced'. Are the numbers 95 to 97 enough to confirm that the tyre is up to the job as plain 97 and 97 'extra load' tyres would have the same maximum load of 730Kg? i.e could a 95 to 97 tyre NOT be Extra load/reinforced. Thanks, Neil. Quote
mumof4 Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 Nope sorry..it has to have reinforced/xtra load on the tyre.. look here.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/215-55HR16-Avon-ZV3-...VQQcmdZViewItem Quote
familyman Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 I ran nankangs on the front of my gal ,and had no problems with them ,this included a fair few runs from Newcastle to cornwall, fully loaded with 4 kids ,wife, luggage and roof box . How many gals are out there running on non reinforced tyres? a fair few i bet ! Get them changed for your own peace of mind ,but as long as you keep them at the right pressure ,check them for kerbing damage etc you should be ok Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 (edited) It need not be reinforced..you need to check that the tyres actually are reinforced...we've been here before... Edited April 29, 2007 by Ivor_E_Tower Quote
mumof4 Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 sorry but for safety sake i would not put a tyre on my gal that wasnt reinforced or extra load. These cars weigh in over 2 tons each .My handbook does state reinforced or extra load tyres to be used or it may invalidate your insurance in the event of an accident. I may be female..but i know tyres. Quote
neiluk Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 Forgive me for still being a bit confused, but why would a 97 and a 97 reinforced both have the same max load rating? Could it be that some makers don't bother putting 'Extra Load' on their tyres because they expect people to go by the Load rating? This table from a previous post insists it is vital to use tyres of the correct load rating but has nothing to say about reinforced/extra load markings. Could this be because they are superfluous? http://www.tyres-online.co.uk/techinfo/load_indices.asp Thanks for the heads up on the Ebay tyre Mumof4 :-) Thanks all, Neil. Quote

sanjsanj Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 I found this article REALLY useful: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html Also, while on this subject, I would like to draw everyone's attention to the "Minimum legal tread depth does not mean "safe"." part of the article. Press PAGE DOWN 13 times, and you should be at the right place (might be different for different resolutions), It could just save your life! Quote

In a word yes, the load rating is what it can carry at a certain pressure, 97 is above normal so sometimes shown by extra load or reinforced, it is the load rating that matters. Quote
tiny Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 try looking here.. http://www.blackcircles.com/general/technology This link refers to run flat tyres rather than reinforced tyres. Run Flats do have reinforced sidewalls but are not an extra load tyre. They maintain their shape after a puncture so that in the event of a puncture you still maintain full control of the vehicle, in fact you probably wont even know you have a puncture unless you have a tyre pressure warning system on your car. The downside to these tyres is that no matter what the manufacturer states, they have a detrimental affect on ride quality. I do agree though that it is the load index that is important rather than the RF, XL reinforced or whatever terminology the particular manufacturer uses. Quote
mumof4 Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 oops..sorry..was a bit busy at the time what with one thing and another. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Reinforced tyres have stronger sidewalls. They will flex less when you corner and therefore reduce the possibility of "peeling the tyre of the rim" which can happen if you use non-reinforced tyres and then corner in an enthusiastic manner Quote
neiluk Posted April 30, 2007 Author Report Posted April 30, 2007 Has anyone tried Avon tyes? At least I have heard of Avon and they seem to be at a sensible price. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...p;rd=1&rd=1 Thanks, Neil. Quote

Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 12, 2007 Report Posted May 12, 2007 I had 2 Avons fited to the front about 2 years ago...one was discarded due to a puncture a couple of months ago, the other looks nearly worn to the wear bars after approx 10,000 miles  which is a bit sad as initially they looked like they were wearing better than the Dunlop 2020's. They are quieter than the Dunlops and appear to have more grip...... maybe I should just corner with less enthusiasm? Quote
