familyman Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 Can i ask everyone to check the air pressure in their spare tyres ? did mine yesterday ,only to find it down to 20 psi -no use to anyone in the event of a puncture , it only takes a minute and would save a lot of hassle if you were unlucky enough to get a puncture . Guest wolfie Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 I check mime every time I clean the garage out! I should really sling it in the skip next time as the tyre walls have cracked! and that happened way before I took it off the car! shame really as it has never been on the road and used in anger  Quote
big_kev Posted April 15, 2007 Report Posted April 15, 2007 20psi although far from ideal is not a worry for a galaxy spare tyre.....it will get you home no problem...cost you a bit on performance and fuel economy.Although I would only recommend fitting it to the rear wheels.....keep the good ones on the front. More worrying is the state of the spare tyre.........especially any side wall damage. Anyone know how long a tyre should be kept as an unused spare before it the rubber starts to decay ? Quote
tim-spam Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 It is recommended that tyres should be replaced after no more than 8 years, although this is an absolute maximum. The Caravan Club recommends changing caravan tyres after 5 years, and the Fire Service replaces tyres on fire engines after around 6 years. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 How do they do that? I can't get my tyres to last more than 28K miles or two years!!!! Quote
adrianf. Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 How do they do that? I can't get my tyres to last more than 28K miles or two years!!!! 28K Id be happy to get that out of two setsMe thinks i need to slow down a bit eh Quote
tim-spam Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 Fire engines, caravans, trailers, etc. rarely do enough miles to wear out the tyres - hence the age limit. Quote
tim-spam Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 Oh, and by the way, did you realise that you never have to replace the spare on the new Galaxy? Quote

Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 17, 2007 Report Posted April 17, 2007 Anyone know how long a tyre should be kept as an unused spare before it the rubber starts to decay ? When I traded my Honda in for the Gal, the Honda still had its original spare - 18 years old and only used for about 10 miles once after I got a puncture from motorway debris. Another good reason for keeping the spare up to pressure is that if you are unfortunate enough to be rear-ended, the tyre wil absorb quite a bit of the impact. The spare should always be kept at the maximum pressure (7-up, high speed journey when fully laden) as it is comparatively easy to let a bit of air out if you have to replace it for less onerous duties Quote
MadBaz Posted April 18, 2007 Report Posted April 18, 2007 I check my spare rarely, but I do carry one of them little 12v compressors for sale on some forecourts for about a fiver, its not very accurate or powerful but it does the job when necessary, its also useful for inflating the boys footballs, I think its a must have, can save some time/calling recovery when little b*****d of a nephew has let 2 tyres down!
