hi all

cant afford to run my 2l gal so its a derv engine going in. ive ruled out the ford lumps as they use a mtx75 box shafts etc are all different. now the looking at a gal in a showroom its a vedub unit i suspect out of a golf etc which happens to use the vtx box, my question is what golf or other vw is the lump out of as im trying to find one that doesnt use a ecu just a normal mechanical pump etc would save me hours of time doing all the wire work. yes i hear you all say buy a diesel gal well i cant afford to. i need a mpv so im stuck with petrol at mo

Sounds like you're looking for a lot of agro.

I don't know how much mileage you do but if you're serious about replacing the engine, it might be worth doing some calculations on how much a diesel would save over a year or so and factoring that into your calculations. It's also worth bearing in mind that the power and efficiency you can get out of a non ECU unit won't even come close to the standard Gal oil burner. It's computer control that makes it all possible.

I admire your ambition but I'd run a mile from what you're planning and I'll be very suprised if anyone on this site can find an ounce of encouragement.

Nevertheless, I wish you every success if you do go ahead.

To give you a "straight" answer - until the current "mark 3" Galaxy, all the diesel engines in the Galaxy are made by VW, but you need to be sure if buying a used engine that it was for a transverse application not longitudinal - an engine from a Golf may be OK but one from a Passat won't fit. The original Galaxys used the "traditional" VW diesels but post-facelift, the PD versions were used. These will require the electronics etc to make them work
