2001 Mondeo 1.8 - 2 Problems - Pinking And Whining

Hi,

car has done 75k. Have had it a few months and noticed today (cos had window open) that it's pinking under load, like when going up a slight hill at 40mph in 5th (or even 4th). It also makes the same pinking noise at tickover if I put a load on, eg the heated windows plus headlights.

Given it's all computer controlled, any ideas what the matter might be.

And another thing - there's this whining noise which is constant with speed, no matter which gear you're in. Particularly noticeable at 30-50mph (after that the road noise probably drowns it). Only there when under power, as soon as I back off the gas the noise goes. Have had wheel bearings checked - garage said they were OK. Could this be a gearbox noise (or a clutch noise) or was my first instinct of wheel noise closer to the mark?

Many thanks for any replies.

Gary.

Umm...what is pinking?

it's where you cut a saw tooth pattern in the edge of a peice of cloth in an attempt to control the amount of fraying and the weave unravelling, well it still frays but as not as bad as a regular straight cut unfinished edge, due to the shorter lengths of thread left after the cut! :18:

Pinking: also known as knocking. Happened more in the olden days of non-electronic ignition when the timing was too far advanced. This meant the spark was coming before the piston had arrived at the top of the compression stroke so there was a knocking noise. Usually rectified by retarding the ignition a bit (albeit with loss of power): on my old Capri I always carried the right size spanner in the car so I could fix it quickly by loosening the distributor and rotating it very slightly.

Given that modern computer engines should have all the timing controlled automatically, I'm confused why this should be a problem.

Cheers

PS This is only what I have picked up over the years - I am no mechanic and might have totally the wrong end of the stick about pinking/knocking/whatever...

Ive never heard of pinking (pre-ignition) being refered to as knocking before,

To me, knocking means your Big-ends are Fubar'd!

I'm no mechanic so we'll leave it at pinking! But wasn't lead added to petrol as "anti-knock"; and when it was removed we had to retard the ignition to stop the pinking...

Anyway - so the timing's sometimes out on my car. It has computer controlled iginition so how can this be??

Cheers

Doesn't the camshaft sensor report the timing/TDC to the ECU, just a thought I could be wrong.

edit: no I'm not wrong. Probably a good idea to get it to a dealer and get the codes read, you could end up on severall wild goose cases before getting to the true cause.
