jkspoff Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Double check that you have filters plugged into every single telecommunication equipment, including sky digibox and all telephone extensions, don't run your broadband off an extension, plug it into the master house socket. That should do the trick. Is it wireless ? Quote
mumof4 Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 not wireless, sorry, got disconnected again.Filters all in place....modem thingy is connected into an extension, have no choice as the only phone socket in the house is right by the front door at the end of the hallway, nowhere to put pc there. mumof4 Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 ok, ive now dropped from 8.1mbps to 6.2 mbps.CPU usage alternates between 0 and 7 percent.oops..now 5.7 mbps.!!...what the flip is happening here??everything was ok till just before 2pm..now its all gone haywire.dropped connection 4 times writing this post. Bigjeeze Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Try checking the providers website - it may be a system fault and not your machine at all!! Quote
mumof4 Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 i would if the connection didnt drop everytime i change page.with tiscali if anyone can check for me please Quote
jkspoff Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 I checked Tiscali for you and there is no mention of any current network fault issues. The vast majority of broadband disconnections are down to noise on the line. You have also got a very high speed connection, I would opt for a lower speed with more stability if it persists. Why not just try and plug it in the main socket for a short while, then you will know if it is down to the extension ? Quote
mumof4 Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 the cables on the modem wont reach...the distance from the socket to the only place where the pc can go is about 8 meters. And those two little cables on that wee black modem wont stretch that far.speed is back up to 8.1 after just reconnecting yet again!!..Id had no problems with it prior to this aft..Id have to shift the tower, monitor and everything else and plonk it all down in front of the front door on the floor. thank you for checking. mumof4 Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 ok..cpu usage is very low, between 0 and 4 percent..is it supposed to be this low?PF usage is 277MB. Quote
Smilge Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 (edited) Mum would agree with jk ...... there are outstanding issues around here with BT who provide the lines and the biggest problem was noise on the line. The other thing you can try is to ask them to turn up the gain on your line. That has worked for a number of my colleagues. The CPU usage is just showing how much processing it is doing ..... in your case very little ...so thats good .... the PF is the Page file or the virtual memory and 277Mb is about right if you have 512Mb of RAM. Its not the PC thats the problem. Edited March 26, 2007 by Bleeno Quote

Gain is basically turning the signal up louder ..... trouble is it might turn up the noise too if the line is noisy ..... you can always tell them you have a poor signal to noise ratio on your line ..... that'll get em thinking .... ;) http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/broadband/cablesetup.html http://www.broadband4lhanbryde.co.uk/information/speed-test/ http://www.exetel.com.au/c_dropout.php These links should help Mum Edited March 26, 2007 by Bleeno Quote
Dave-G Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 If it's any help, when I looked into 8MB broadband, BT indicated that during the first few weeks of that speed they will try several connections to establish the most stable route. but since i can't get that spped I didn't take them up on it. Quote
MadBaz Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Maz, with new ADSL connections, BT test the speed over a few days/weeks to find what is the most stable so your likely to find the speed getting higher and lower but it will settle down, the other thing is it depends on how many people are using the net on your local loop (contention ratio) at any one time it could in theory be up to 50, doesn't explain the dropping of your connection though. If it doesn't settle by thursday then there is something wrong and a call to Tiscali c/s should be in order and I'd be asking for a free month. If its a usb modem then shut down your pc, unplug the modem from pc and power, reboot to windows then plug modem back in power first then to usb port and see if that solves it. Quote
mumof4 Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 Its not a usb modem, its one that connects with a little square thingy ....i have tried new filters and the new modem i got after i moved in which i didnt need as i already had the gear.Ive uninstalled and reinstalled it.I had almost 3 hours of no dropping and its just now dropped 3 times in a row...make that 4!!.gawd..this is getting tedious now. ;) Quote
malcolm.dobell Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 I had a problem with my high speed 512kB/s connection dropping out. Eventually, with absolutely everything diconnected except the router/modem, I unscrewed the master phone socket and found it plugged into another socket behing the master one - if you get what I'm saying. Engineer came and diagnosed defective socket, fitted a new one and no problems from then. The symptoms of my problem were similar to what you're reporting Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 one of those told you so moments, hehe MJRx Quote
