Guest jonny_boy Posted March 19, 2007 Report Posted March 19, 2007 Hi all, just sending a note to say Hi.Im not a Galaxy owner but i am looking to buy a reasonable mk1 as finances are as healthy as a dead dog at the mo! My main query is which engine is the best to go for?I appreciate the diesel is the best for economy but also costs alot more to buy. Ive heard that the 2.0 petrolstruggles a bit with full load so was thinking perhaps the 2.3 is best to go for. According to parkers the fuel economy is the same for both? Also are any of the petrol engines in mk1 zetecs at all?? Lastly (cheeky git on first go i know!) what is the best gadget on a galaxy thats worth having out of : Climate vs std airconcruise controlheated screenheated seatsparking sensors Many thanks Jon Quote
mumof4 Posted March 19, 2007 Report Posted March 19, 2007 Cant help with the rest but id go for parking sensors every time.....Im lost when mine pack in.LOL. Quote

MadBaz Posted March 19, 2007 Report Posted March 19, 2007 (edited) TOU defo need in order of priority: 1. Any working aircon climate/manual as long as it works. We really suffered on the hottest days of last year2. Heated screen3. Parking sensors, I stil struggle in Sainsburys car park4. If you do a lot of miles then Cruise control5. Heated seats? never had em on a car so I don't know Just my opinion based on what I miss the most :( :( edit: Oh and Hi watch out for mo4, they let her loose at weekends  Edited March 19, 2007 by MADBAZ Quote

El Dingo Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Honestly, I'd look for a 2.3 Ghia - all the most important toys are already on board. Good luck and good hunting. B) Quote
Guest jonny_boy Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Hi second post, getting good at this lol Thanks to all those who have posted replies to my first question , now i have another! Which car would any of you go for and why 1/ Ford Galaxy 1999 T reg 2.3 Zetec Automatic 89,000 miles Quote
mumble_bee Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 trying to be totally impartial here... I have a Treg 2.3 ghia with 96k on the clock for sale (much cheaper than that one... plug plug).. but tbh if you're going to do anything like 10-15k miles a year and are keeping the car for a bit.. I'd go for the TDI.. the 2.3 manual (mine) gives me about 330 miles to Quote
Dave-G Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 The seat has a tad more in it than the Galaxy in the MK1's Little things like a 'remote control for the radio on the stalk, nicer seats etc... Don't let 130k put you off a diesel if it's running ok. Try and get at least 3 months warranty with it - even if you have to pay a tad extra for it, gives you time to find any faults. Seat tailgate looks nicer and that badge is shiney, loud and proud innit? Quote
Smilge Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Hiya m8 ...... I would go for the Diesel ..... more economical and it also might be worth seeing what Gordon Brown does next week before considering either. Chris Quote

Guest jonny_boy Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Hey Mumble_bee Could you give me your spec of your galaxy for sale??Sounds interesting .... I know Luton is a bit of a journey but if its good, who knows.Besides gives you an excuse to advertise on here lol Quote
Guest jonny_boy Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Hi, is there any way of telling the difference between a 90 bhp Tdi sharan and a 110 bhp Tdi sharan from looking at it? Im thinking of looking at an R reg sharan TDi Carat (no idea if 97 or 98 yet) locally and when i spoke to him before he said that he thought all carats were 110 but im sure there are 90s as well.So is there any way to know please? Also does anyone have a top end user manual for sharan/galaxy/alhambra to see what all available buttons could be used are as over a period of time not every salesperson seems to know what they all do? sheesh. If i have a plan i'll know instantly diff between heated seats, cruise control etc! Many thanks Jon Quote
tim-spam Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Red 'I' on TDI = 110PSAll silver TDI = 90PS Quote
Guest jonny_boy Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Hey again, still after my second hand gal, bam, shaz etc Does anyone know what real difference there is in the economy rate of an automatic vs a manual? I have 2 in mind , one is a 2.3 galaxy zetec auto and the other a 2.0 auto sharan carat? I just want to know what how much mpg is lost through being an auto on these 2 cars? Many thanks PS Am i right in saying that the new car tax fees for group G are only on big cars bought after 2005? Quote
mumof4 Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 car tax depends on when it was registered not just bought.also the emissions. Quote

big_kev Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 (edited) There is very little difference in economy between a Auto and a manual. The stats will show the manual being more economic....however in practice the manner of driving vastly outweighs this. Most drivers of autos tend to drive a bit more sedately than manual drivers and as such will have better economy. Also you will find that the 2.3l is more economical than the 2.0l as the 2.0l engine is not powerful enough for the Galaxy and has to be consistently flogged whereas the 2.3l can be driven without the accelerator pedal constantly being on the floor. The V6 will have crap economy regardless of gearbox and the diesel will have good economy regardless of gearbox. My current gal is a diesel manual and I would gladly swap it for an automatic, much nicer to drive. The only benefit the manual offers over the auto is the much cheaper gearbox repair should it arise. If you get anyone saying a manual is better for any other reason ( other than racing ) ignore them, they have never driven an auto for any length of time. Edited March 29, 2007 by big_kev Quote
Andrew T Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Official figures for 2.3 are 20.2/36.2/28 Mpg for Manual, 18.7/32.8/25.7 Mpg Auto, 0-60 12.7 / 14.1 Secs respectively. The Sharan 2.0 is only 115BHP compared to 142 in the 2.3, but post 2000 models would have 5 speed auto 'box. We had one at work and with 7 adults on board it was lethally slow. Mpg and emissions are comparable to the 2.3.Only Petrols registered agter the 23.3.2006 would be in band g, older ones remain in band F.p Quote
Guest jonny_boy Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Hi, thanks guys for the info. Thats fascinating about the usage of the automatic compared to manual and i completely agree i was alwayssurprised at stats showing such a degree of drop in an auto.To be honest i would go for a diesel as preference but hard to find and are alot more and after all this timei may just go for the petrol. Agreed about the 2.3 i think this will be the better engine for petrol.I think out of the two cars listed it would be the zetec i would go for. However still so tempted to hold outfor a ghia x to have all the toys as well lol The wife loves the idea of heated seats in the winter!!! One other thing that always crosses my path with all these cars is the colour of the interior , in particular the dashboard. Why oh why oh why oh b*****y why do they insist on having a BLUE dashboard???????????????Apologies to all of you that have them and like them , but i just loathe it as it just makes it look so cheap. Alas 60% of themseem to have this disturbing choice of colour so makes finding one i want even harder! Quote
big_kev Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 I would definitely advise going for the highest spec possible if buying second hand, the price difference is negligible. Definitly advise not to buy the 2.0L. For economy rather than a diesel you could always look for a "suicide bomber" ...sorry, that should be LPG conversion. Quote
mumof4 Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 Blue dashboard???..mines black,..are there really blue ones out there??..I like my Gal, but i wish i had a diff colour interior!!..beige and kids just don't mix well! Quote
