'Reinforced' and 'Extra Load' (XL) mean the same thing, it's just different manufacturers' terminology. Most manufacturers (including Dunlop) are now using the term 'Extra Load' as it more accurately reflects the purpose of these tyres. Reinforced implies a different construction, and is a but this is not now necessarily the case. edit - Sorry MADBAZ, I typed this reply out and got interrupted before pressing submit... Edited July 19, 2007 by sparky Paul Quote
jkspoff Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 So, where is the cheapest high street place to buy tyres then ? I have been quoted anything from Quote

sparky Paul Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 (edited) What do you think to the tyres, is there much grip on both wet and dry ? How much were they fitted and balanced ? Pretty good tyres IMHO. My tyre fitter man says they look a good quality tyre too. Mine have about 6 months wear left on them, and I will definitely be buying the same tyres again. Wet performance better than the previous Dunlops, and much quieter too. Edited July 19, 2007 by sparky Paul Quote
neiluk Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Just fitted 4 Hankook Ventus Prime K105's (215-55-16) Load Rating 97 For around Quote
davethedoor Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 Hi all had a new dunlop 215x55x16 sp2020 fitted on saturday Quote
seatkid Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 If they are asymetric then they will have the word INSIDE and OUTSIDE prominently on the sidewall. If they are directional then they will have a large arrow and/or the word DIRECTION or something like that on the sidewall. Quote
davethedoor Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 Thanks seatkid there is D in a small circle an a arrow from it and a white dot on the outside sidewall and the tread patern looks like it going the wrong way comperd to the rest of the tyres so i will tack it back... Thanks Dave Quote
shepheap Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 See the below link. I have now been using these Fortuna F2000 215/55 r16s for 6 months. Very good tread wear. Quiter than the dunlops and HALF the price ( Quote

Thanks Dave The SP2020s are symmetrical, i.e. NON-directional. The 'D' inside the chevron is just Dunlop's logo, and if you look on the inside wall of the tyre you'll find another one pointing in the opposite direction. If you have an axle pair fitted, the writing and logo will always read clockwise. Quote
El Dingo Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 (edited) Anyone tried the following, all reinforced, on the Galaxy?Continental EcoContactGoodyear F1 GSD3Cooper Zeon XTC (???)Falken ZE-512 (edit - I meant Falken, not Flaken...) Edited July 22, 2007 by El Dingo Quote
neiluk Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 In the Which? tyre test the Continental EcoContact 2 come out well but seems expensive. Wet grip isn't quite as good as some others. I wouldn't touch the Falken ZE-512 tyres looking at their results!!!! http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f138/Rog...hichTyres-1.jpg Neil. Quote

NikpV Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 well I need 2 tyres on the back so I will move the dunlop 2020 from the front - I am fed up with the wear rate/cost of the dunlops - when I bought the car I could put on the michelin mxm at Quote
seatkid Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 How about this? Spent the afternoon shuffling my Alhambra tyres around, cleaning alloys and checking brake pads. Now has the front tyres with the original factory fitted Conti SportContacts (215/60H15 date code 10 98) - which make them 9 years old with 78,000 miles! Got 2.5 - 3mm tread left. Just a little crazing appearing in the rubber on the tread edges. The rears are also Conti SportContact dated 36 01, they've done about 40000 miles and have 3.5 - 4 mm tread and in very good condition. I move the tyres around every 20-25000 miles including the spare. I garage the car when I can, it stops the UV and the weather attacking them. I have 2 - 3 mm on my rear brake pads and over 5mm on my fronts, again the original factory pads. I will be changing the rear pads and the front tyres when I get to 80000 miles which will be another 2 - 3 months. Will go for Conti PremiumContact as SportContacts no longer made in my size. :( Hankooks, Hiroshimas, Yingtong etc also not available in my size not that I would ever want to fit them... Had similar good experiences with Conti EcoContact EP/3 on other cars. As you can guess....I only recommend Continental! B) Quote
jkspoff Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 (edited) Just ordered 2 front Nexen 3000 XL for the Gal, read some good reports on them on the web and here, www.blackcircles.com, with 5% discount when you put 'GALAXY' into the voucher discount box. insider Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 (edited) As you can guess....I only recommend Continental! Congratulations on achieving such high mileage from your tyres! However, do you think this is more to do with your driving style than the tyres themselves? Perhaps you take corners more gently and accelerate and brake more gradually than most? Is the majority of your driving on motorways rather than around town where I would expect more tyre wear due to repeated accelerating and braking and more turns? I've had Dunlops and Michelins and my own experience is that they wear out within 12~15,000 miles, having swapped front to back diagonally once in between. I currently have Falken ZE512s fitted (German company I believe but made in Japan!). After 3,000 miles I can already see signs of wear on the outside edges of the front tyres but I put this mainly down to the short trips / town driving / fast corners. The tyre pressures are 44 front and 47 rear (recommended pressures for max. load). Edited July 25, 2007 by insider Quote
