Gteuk Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 Posted by Dan Gleebitz in technical section but I thought I would also post it here A warning from the Picasso Site ...... Over the last few days it has become apparent that a defective batch of Petrol is being sold in the South East and South London. There are reports from various Citroen, Land Rover, Mercedes, SAAB and Vauxhall dealers of cars suddenly starting to run rough and stalling a few days after refuelling, far too many to be coincidental. In each case it was found that Lambda Sensors had been coated with a deposit from the fuel which renders them unserviceable. The long term affect on the catalysts has not been explored. Sources of this fuel has been identified as Morrisons, Asda, Tescos and Total over the last 10 days. Quote
MadBaz Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 I had some dodgy stuff from Co-Op in huddersfield, but not to the extent of stalling, when I re-fueled at Jet the difference was like chalk and cheese, I was beggining to think Coil pack/spark plugs/MAF were faulty. Quote
whitty Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 apparently this is a big problem it was just on the news if you ask me it's another damn good reason to stay away from tesco's fuel ! it's cheap for a reason ! they should stick to selling bread and milk Quote
mumble_bee Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6405051.stm I was under the impression they were still trying to figure out who where what when...wouldnt it be a little early to boycott a specific company ? (no I dont work for tescos) Quote
NikpV Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 can't believe it would just be tesco's though surely a petrochem company blends for all the cheapo companies Quote
sanjsanj Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 apparently, they're blaming too much ethanol in the fuel....surely, ethanol burns to give carbon dioxide and waterand hydrocarbons burn to give the same thing So why does this "contamination" coat lamda sensors? Quote
NikpV Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 unburnt ethanol has a -OH group which may bind to the active sensor surface petrol do not have the polar group  Quote
katman Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Well, yesterday I was wondering if the affected fuel was in my area. Today on the BBC local news they interviewed a mechanic from the Peugeot garage a mile from my house. They have about 20 cars waiting for new Lambda sensors  Quote
seatkid Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 And the local "cheap MOT" place up here has a queue of cars requiring new brake discs...spooky or what? "Not running right sir?" (sharp intake of breath) "Looks like the Oxygen sensor.......we're looking at least Quote
AndeeeH Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 According to the news on Radio 2, the only thing they have found in the dodgy fuel that shouldn't be in there is silicon?? Andy. Quote
Smilge Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 apparently, they're blaming too much ethanol in the fuel....surely, ethanol burns to give carbon dioxide and waterand hydrocarbons burn to give the same thing So why does this "contamination" coat lamda sensors? Because the outside of the Lamda sensor has a platinum electrode that acts as a catalytic converter where the exhaust is subjected to catalytic aftertreatment and bought into stoichiometric equilibrium. So, if you subject this to a non-HO substance, this will affect the oxygen concentration within the exhaust and therefore the air fuel mixture supplied to the engine. The output of the sensor has a very narrow operating lean/rich output which lies between 450 to 500 mV. Quote
Smilge Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 English? :P How about in Proffessor Unwin speakifold? Quote
katman Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 English? :P How about in Proffessor Unwin speakifold? Katman remembers an advert for tyres...... "Outstandee gripifold in the slippy slider" .... cant remember the brand though !!! Couldnt find the advert on youtube but did find one for an Amstrad Word Processor :D Quote
