have you just got the cable in the ground then :16:

Yep

Baz, If you "accidentally" go through the siamese cable under your garden, phone up faults and claim to be ill or disabled and ask for special needs forms to be sent out. You will then be granted one grace special needs visit and an engineer will attend within 4 hours and rectify the issue! Seems like everyone does this these days, the amount I have to deal with out of hours!!!! :16:

Nah, I'm not like that, I'm pretty good at getting companies to honour agreements/contracts though. I've found it always helps to have Consumer Directs (trading standards) phone number in my mobile. I'm not an habitual complainer I just want a fair deal, if I have to stamp my feet to get that I will.

Glad to hear it. Too many out there that abuse the system at the detriment of genuine people.

The standard NTL-Telewest and any other previous cable company installation is usually pretty dreadful, you get the odd exception.

Most cable are buried just a few inches, just enough so the customer doen't see them.

They then typically get the old spade through them when you dig the garden, edging the lawn is almost a cert to cut them.

Green flexible pipe ! about 50 / 50 whether you get this or not.

The installers are usually a sub-contractor using local labour.

Sacking the sub-contract company usually ends up with another contractor using the same local labour eg the same guys.

The network is very iffy and extremely insecure especially for the telephone service.

Just thought I would let you know.

That's wierd. I get cable TV and telephone package for less than BT telephone only.

...and cheaper call charges.

6p connection fee......0845/0870 up to 600% more than standard BT rates...locked out of indirect carrier access.......yup..... guess someone needs some new glasses to read the small print.....

Me and the Girlfriend think Sky/cable tv is worth it just for the Top Gear repeats, not sure if they're available on freeview though.

There is a lot of tat on tv atm, but we can always switch it off and do other things..........

Thanks for all the replies, just been visiting in York for the weekend (and flood-watching!) so I tried the box there and it picks up ITV fine. The Aerial is about 5 years old and has a (60amp?) amplifier. I was told when it was fitted that it was suitable for Digital but I'll dig further into that area because It must be where the problem lies. Thanks for the links.

Cable isn't a solution I'm afraid - no cable within 10 miles of here. (Or Gas, or mains sewage come to that. We do have running water and electricity though).

If it means spending a lot of money I would go for a dish though - the Aerial and pole look a mess strapped to the chimney of a 300 year-old house and I worry about it bringing the chimney down in high winds. It also seems to make the whole house resonate at certain wind speeds - is that really possible ?

Back to basics for a possible cause.

If your final connection to your TV is a bit dodgy you can get all sorts of silly problems. I had a similar problem to start with. TV analogue signals fine but very scrappy digital so, as an ex TV technician instructor I ripped the box off the wall, remade the connection and replaced the connector lead but no change. Tried the box on the input to the distribution system in the loft - fine, so I baught two more leads from different sources and still no good. Finally, in desperation, I used a short lenght of low loss coax and a couple of plugs to make up a new lead and problem solved. The difference was in effect a total transformation.

The lesson is - dont trust those 'orrible thin white leads that most outlets will sell you.

Incidentally, opinion only, but a good analogue picture is miles better than even the best terestial digital and who wants that other

Scorpiorefugee is bang on, pre-made leads, especially the thin white ones are absolute

This really comes back to my original question. I get a mediocre Analogue BBC1 &2 but good Digital signal, and a good analogue signal for ITV but no Digital. I can also get a lovely S4C and BBC2 wales analogue but I don't speak much welsh.

Replacing the cable and moving the Digibox is also worth a try though.
