NikpV Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 if disconnecting the looms allows you to lock the car then I would be looking at the state of the insulation and wiring inside the rubber boots - click on the link in my signature and look in the faq there are several posts linked in there. Might be useful to update your sig to reflect your car details - get this right though because ATM the site is so FLAKEY you may not be able to change it for a while Quote
morticiaskeeper Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Sounds like a wet central locking unit to me. Look under the passenger seat. The electronics box is the central locking computer. Is there any moisture around it? If there is, it's coming from the scuttle drains or the washer pipe. The washer pipe for the rear door has a joint near the passenger seat. The scuttle drains channel water from the windscreen to the rear of the front wheel arches. Lift the bonnet and look in the far corners behind the wiper mechanism and the pollen filter. If the pollen filter is wet, that. will be where the water is getting in. I clear my scuttle drains by pushing a small carbon rod, like a curtain rail, from the back of the engine bay right down until I can see the rod come out of the flap in the rear of the wheel arch. You will need to partially remove the arche liner by removing a few of the torx screws. The flap can get clogged up with debris. If the clu is wet, disconnect it and let it dry in the house, and pray ;) Mine survived, but the window closing is kaput. If everything is dry, I would take a good look at the wires through the door hinges. Quote
NikpV Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 central locking box was moved to engine bulk head ages ago but don't know year of OP car - yet Quote

MadBaz Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 It could also be the door lock mechanism, there is a 'paddle' on the end of the key barrel which connects to the lock motor, this becomes brittle/worn over time and can disintegrate. Do you get the same symptoms using the passenger door / boot lock? if not then the handle/barrel is the likely suspect. If you need replacement then go to a VW dealer as they can order the indvidual pieces for a few quid, unlike ford who'll insist on a new handle c/w barrel and the new key will need programming, in total about Quote
lordhawes Posted January 5, 2007 Author Report Posted January 5, 2007 AT LAST I HAVE CURED MY CENTRAL LOCKING PROBLEM. Was checking wiring looms in the tailgate and traced wires down through back quater panel and noticed the loom divides into four plugs. When i disconected them they were all wet,[HENCE MY SHORT CIRCUITING] Dried them out and reposisioned them as i guess water has been running down loom from rubber gromet leading to boot. Glad i didnt get garage to find fault would have had hefty bill as their advice was replace the central locking.thanks for every ones advice..... Quote
