Guest rambo Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 this is a wierd one whilst driving back from my brothers in southampton as i live in kent, on the m25 when it was really windy last weekend, i was doing about 85 mph and all of a sudden there was a loud windy whistling noise the interior light came on as my drivers door opened to the first position not fully open half open, i immediatley slow down and pulled over to the hard shoulder whilst holding the door shut, thinking maybe i did not shut it properly so i opened it and slammed it shut, carried on and it done it again, shocking or what, anyone know whats ocurring with that, aint been on the motorway since thank god ! i treat it well why is it trying to kill me  Quote
mumof4 Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Faulty locking mechanism maybe?...... Quote
NikpV Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 probably faulty wiring in the rubber boot between door & pillar - have a look in the faq for ways to check (click on the link in my signature) Quote
Dave-G Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Gremlins done that, nuthin you can do but stop, get out, jump up and down while shouting bu66er then get back in drive off immediatly  Quote
Guest wolfie Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 probably faulty wiring in the rubber boot between door & pillar - have a look in the faq for ways to check (click on the link in my signature) but isn't the actual locking/latching mechanism a mechanical operation? in this case I would favour checking the condition of the latch and the striker plate? then move onto the electrical control items, if these misalign the door will shut but will not allow the latch to locate correctly and clamp the striker pin, we had a similar problem with the rear hatch! it would shut, but not switch off the interior light and would rattle and open slightly if you pushed it from inside! mumof4 Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 I would have thought that at speed and the winds..would create pressure to keep the door pressed firmly against the body..unless the mechanism was weak and the door wasnt quite flush with the body thus creating a gap for the wind to roll back into and create pressure to open it?...Just a thought anyway.... raymac Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Not to sure about the door but driving at 85mph in strong winds would have had my underpants beyond repair  :) Quote

tiny Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Mines doing the same!! Last week I had a problem with the door not shutting properly Link to my original post Anyhow, havent got round to fitting the new catch yet (if it fits), but in the meantime gave it a spray with WD40 then a bit of spray grease, all was fine till I drove down the road a few miles then "pop" the door was open Its done it a dozen times now, but as its a second car (and i'm a lazy sod) i haven't got round to fixing it. ALARM MAN Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 85 MPH And you have wind something has to give THE WEAKEST LINK Quote
mumof4 Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Rambo...methinks you left yourself wide open on this one!! :) Quote

MadBaz Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Strange very strange, mines been doing same, only drivers door, its a mechanical fault rather than electrical I think. I've sprayed WD40 to no avail, It does seem to be worse when its cold though. door can't be forced, but when going over bumps, humps and traffic wardens :) , it opens. I'll get the lock out this weekend and have a look and hopefully ppost a solution. 85 MPH IN STRONG WINDS methinks someones gonna be cashing in a life insurance policy soon! Quote
jkspoff Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 True, but nevertheless it shouldn't do that at any speed. I'd get it checked asap, what if it happened to a rear door instead whilst a kid was leaning on it ?? Its been unfortunately known for a child to slip out of a seat belt when falling side ways out of a door thats opened. :) Quote

Guest Cepheus Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 The wind rushing past the external skin of the door will create an area of low pressure on the outside of the door. If the door lock mechanism isn't latching on properly then this low pressure will in effect suck the door outwards. Same principle that causes lift with aeroplane wings. However it happens, it needs sorting! Can the latch bar be adjusted in any way? Maybe its losenned off and come out of line with the lock? Quote
tiny Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Ive just fixed this same problem on mine, the door latch mechanism was quite badly corroded on its internal components so I changed it and , Hey Presto door stays shut. Quote
redneck01246 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 ive done two but only seems to be mark 1's (maybe age related)both units a spring had corroded and snappedno internal parts available so changed the catch on both cars no probs since  Quote
