mumof4 Posted December 11, 2006 Author Report Posted December 11, 2006 First thing the guy at tesco did was turn it over to look for the sticker..all that is left is one corner and a strip type thing that you get in notes...he said that without that there was not a lot they could do..When i rang acer..they said that unless i can provide them with a license number they cant help..as they said the set up disc/xp disc is serial coded to the xp on the laptop.. so ask acer what the xp license was for a laptop s/n of .......... I dont understand what you mean :D Quote
mumof4 Posted December 11, 2006 Author Report Posted December 11, 2006 Just had a call....the hard drive is gone..it is corrupted and no longer reads...i have been quoted 150 tops to get it fixed :16: ..so im just gonna get it back off him. What i would like to know..is how could this happen? It is 7 months old..not used for the internet..used to play games and watch dvds.....how?..how could this happen?...He said with it being only 7 months old it should have a warranty..which it does....but they want to know the license number of the xp...i will try and get back in touch with acer and see what they say now we know what is wrong with it..Not holding out much hope though :D He said a new hard drive was about 55 quid...then would still need recovery discs at 45 quid a pop..labour etc......gawd.. Guest MATT jr Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 the hard drive has either just gone "pop" or its abused (dropped?) get on to acer lol, you've got a warranty, uv just got prove it! MJR Quote

DO NOT get distracted by this talk of the label, any waranty its absense may void is only extra warranty and does not affect you statutory rights under the sale of goods act SOGA. Initially your waranty is with tesco - the sale was through them - be polite but firm (you said you have the receipt) it is up to them to sort it out. Research the SOGA online if you don't believe me. Quote
mumof4 Posted December 11, 2006 Author Report Posted December 11, 2006 Her dad has the receipt..i have asked him to send it to me.. No sign of abuse.....she has etched her name on it..the screen looks as if it has been poked..has blotches on it..The cdrom tray is missing a bit.....and it has a dent in the top....i did tell him not to get her one...but hey..she wanted it so he bought her it just to make her happy. Speak to the bloke at the PC shop and ask him what exactly has gone wrong with the drive. If he's said that it won't read then I'd guess that its either a fault with the platter surface of the drive or with the read/write head. This will be covered under warranty regardless of whether you have the winXP licence number or not. Don't take NO for an answer!! Quote

If its a Phoenix bios try the usual backdoor passwords in no particular order PHOENIX phoenix CMOS BIOS Also if your hard disc is dodgy and you have to get a new one and reinstall windows then keep your old hard disc and buy a cheap usb external dard disk case ( 2.5" version ) and install your old hard disk. You may still be able to get some of your old data from it. Quote

I personally wouldn't touch the recovery console even with a very long bargepole ! Quote

Guest wolfie Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 is it set to boot from cd though? if it's not then it will keep trying to start up via the HD with the corrupt files and will keep giving the error message Quote

Can you get into the BIOS menu, Mof4? Then you can check the 'boot' order, however, it's likely to be CD first (unless Nik proves me wrong about computers AGAIN!!! :D ) Quote
big_kev Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Mo4 you still need to concentrate on getting into the bios and changing the boot up order from HD to CD.Its obviously set to boot up from the HD first. I am sure on this laptop it is possible to reset the bios via a jumper or battery removal. Or finding a backdoor passwords if one exists Can you confirm the bios type ( phoenix, amibios or whatever ) Quote

This gets the BIOS menu on screen... at least it works on my machine. (Just an idea.) Quote
