According to a 'well known' technical information source:

The VXT 75 Manual Transmission

The VXT 75 manual transmission is a new front wheel drive transmission with 5 manually selected gears and a high torque capacity (250 Nm).

The input and output shafts run in taper roller bearings. The gear wheels, synchroniser rings and shift mechanism parts are fairly similar in construction to the MTX 75 manual transmission. The output pinion and the output shaft constitute a single unit.

Make of that what you will. Andy.

andeee, is absolutley right, it is a VXT 75 Gearbox, apparently a VW unit, and heres a useless piece of info to go with it, the 75 means that the input shaft is 75mm away from the output shaft!!

So what engine are you thinking of dropping in twinkle?

Well im thinking of a Zetec, better on fuel and i have had zetecs before so know my way around them and know if somethings not working what it is etc etc.

Plus i know all the tuning tricks of them :o

thats why i wanted to know if the gearbox is a mtx75, as i know all zetecs bolt stright onto that gearbox, so all i wouls need to do is sort out engine mounts which is no proplem.

So its a VTX75 gearbox then, so ids this whats fitted in the 2.3 galaxys then??? if so i know for defo that a zetec will fit, as the 2.3 bottom end is a common mod on RS2000`s and there fitted with the MTX75 box.

Sorry for all the questions, just wont to be sure before i go engine hunting

Ah....I see now. So if a DOHC will fit an MTX transaxle (in the RS2000) and a VTX in the Gal', then a Zetec which fits an MTX in the Mondeo should fit a VTX. Can't fault your logic there, but what about engine wiring looms cooling system connection etc? Realistically I don't think you would ever recover you outlay in terms of improved fuel consumption unless your engine needs replacing anyway, although it would be interesting to see if it works.

There have been a couple of suggestions on here that whilst 2.0 and 2.3 cylinder heads are interchangeable between FWD and RWD DOHC engines the bottom ends are not, and are also very hard to find so a Zetec conversion would make sense. If you could "prove" this conversion it could well benefit others in the future, so - full photo build by the end of the month?

Forgive me for saying this, but I just don't see how insurance companies would entertain major changes such as a completely non standard engine.
