 hiya everybody today ive noticed that my clutch is making a noise but when i depress the pedal the noise goes away does this sound like the clutch or something else your help will be gratefully recieved its done 171000

spoke to someone from my clutch today they say it sounds like a gearbox bearing ive read that mr clutch should be avoided

yep avoid them like the plague, unless your going to watch over them and check that all the parts they use are new and not reconditioned parts  and the guy doing the job has a clue to what he's doing! apart from that I lurve Mr Clutch

Definately clutch release bearing a bit dry ... easy on a rear wheel drive motor but not on this beast. I think I would put up with it unless it gets worse like you say.

I changed mine last week, on the road!!! defo a job for a garage, just make sure they replace what their supposed to, drive shaft bolts, drive shaft seals, etc. Local garage quoted me

This sounds more like an input shaft bearing. If it was the clutch release bearing, I would expect the noise to get worse when you depress the clutch pedal. As it is, when the clutch is engaged, the input shaft is turning, but when you depress the clutch pedal, the drive to the input shaft is disengaged, and it stops turning.

By the way, what sort of noise is it?

thanks for replys so far its like a rattle noise it goes as soon as the pedal is pushed in sometimes as you come up on the pedal it can be really noisey loud rattle

That sounds like the gearbox input shaft. It could also conceivably be the clutch itself or the dual mass flywheel. It it's not causing too much of a problem, and the car drives well, I would tend to leave it to see if it gets much worse.

A good check to confirm this would be to see if it makes the same noise when depressing the clutch with neutral selected. If it does then I would confirm the input shaft bearing as the idler gear is still turning whether or not the car is in gear or not.

this noise is when car is in neutral havent tried it in any gears yet if it is the gearbox input shaft is this expensive to put right

If it is this Roly then it will be expensive .... I had a similar problem on a Sierra where the input shaft bearing had completely collapsed and made changing gear very difficult and extremely "rattly". At the start I thought it was just the the release bearing, which is a quick job once you've got to it. The problem was getting to it! Prop shaft off, bell housing and gearbox off ... The thing was, although this was a relatively simple job, I found the input shaft to the gearbox flapping about due to the bearing failure. This meant stripping the gearbox completely just to get access to a

If the input shaft bearing is completely U/S, there will be considerable noise when driving, and this noise will be proportional to the engine speed. If it's just rattling at idle when in neutral, I wouldn't worry too much - there is, after all, a fair bit of torsional vibration on a diesel, and yours has covered a fair mileage. There is an outside chance that the vibration damper, which is part of the crank pulley which drives the alternator belt, is not doing its job properly - it's worth a look anyway. The other slight possiblilty is the clutch pressure plate itself - if the release mechanism has loosened over time, this may rattle, and when pressed by the cluch release bearing, the rattle would stop. To test this, try pressing the clutch lightly (but without disengaging it), and if the noise disappears, this is the most likely culprit.

couldnt put up with the noise anymore had it booked in to do clutch when apart told me dual mass flywheel was seized up had both clutch and flywheel done
