Just been to the shop..found acceleration was slow but revs high..hit nearly 4k revs before i hit 30mph..

it doesnt sound right..it sounds quiet..no loud chug..just a whirring sound..like hmm..a flap?..it feels like summit just went,,hard to describe....hmm...ill have a drive in it this eve to see if i can get the description right..but its not right...my drag had come back..hesitation on accelerating in third which i thought secureing the maf had fixed....but..now..there is no drag..just feels slow and quiet yet the car is revving high....

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Maz.

Does it rev higher just when you press the accelerator?

Does it happen more in higher gears?

If these symptoms sound right, it sounds like the clutch is worn out.

The 'flapping' sound is a strange one, and that fact that the symptoms happened suddenly, suggests a component failure. Maybe the pressure plate has failed?

i only did a short 5 min journey so didnt get ibto 4th or above...just done a search...could it be theturbo vacuum thingy hose??..pressure plate?

revs high when i accelerate

flapping is pob the wrong guess....knowq how a windmill sounds?sort of like that but very quick..

Does it go into gear OK?

Does the clutch pedal 'feel' normal? Has the 'bite' position changed?

Does the 'windmill' sound increase with engine revs or with road speed?

Posted

clutch is ok

goes into gear ok..and yes noise increases with higher revs,,but its a quiet whirring noise..i lifted the bonnet but couldnt see anything obvious whilst car was running..even with engine running and bonnet up it is too quiet..i could hear air going thru the air fillter box.but..its quiet...

will just go double check bite position..

Bite is same as before.

Stop and check the alternator belt its that that normally starts to split and sounds flappy.

You need the engine off and look down the left hand side of the engine, drivers side of the car, see if the belt is in one piece or if there are bits sticking out of it.

Can cause all sorts of wierd effects incuding smoke when it gets jammed between the case and the crankshaft pulley. Yuch blu esmoke and horrible taste as it all comes up into the car.

Stop the engine and use a torch and check it.

when i had the engine running and head under the bonnet..i didnt see anything wrong with the alternator belt....but i will check it again to be sure..give me 5 mins..

Nope..looks in one piece.

yeah but using ur clutch while car is stationary but still running is gonna cause the clutch to wear out quicker

not yet..waiting for the gaitor to dry out

when i went to fix it ..i found water in the rubber connector thing...so ive been trying to dry that out ..i was told by my tutor that water does get into it?..and that it would be fine?..but i wanted to wait till it was dry..just in case.

It's not the clutch thrust bearing making the whirring noise, is it gents? A good check to see if it is Maz is to leave the car out of gear, engine running with the handbrake on. Now depress the clutch pedal and see if the noise disappears. If it does, then that's a good sign the thrust bearing is dry or possibly on its way out. Just a thought ........ :D

i cant see anything blocking the exhaust...at very low speed it seems fine..but as soon as you accelerate past 20mph the revs go up and the speed doesnt match the revs if you know what i mean..the car seems to be trying to catch up with itself.once you hit 30mph then go to 4th..the hesitation is great....it feels like it is flagging..the clutch seems ok..bite is fine..pedal does not feel spongy or anything and gear change is ok.

when i get the chance im going to have a good rummage under the bonnett..see if anything is amiss..apart from that..i really dont know what else to do..ill just take apart and clean what i can and see if that sorts it out..if not..then its car declared sorn..then really taking apart. :D

The clutch is slipping.

Until you can get the clutch replaced, try to use very light pressure on the accelerator pedal, and leave the car in a low enough gear so that the revs match the road speed. So long as the clutch is slipping, it will be generating a considerable amount of heat - if this continues for too long, you could end up having to replace a distorted flywheel as well as the clutch. You could also burn the clutch out and lose drive altogether.

If it's the clutch, I could post some pics as I'm replacing the slave cylinder on Monday :D (and Tuesday, may run into Wednesday or even Thursday.) :D

Can you feel (or hear) whether the turbo is kicking in? Does it feel like you have permanent turbo lag?

You say that it is most noticeable above 20 mph .... is it more noticeable above any certain RPM? Does the car run as it did up to about 1750 rpm but then lose what power there used to be above that?

With it being more noticeable in 4th, and as the car will be at lower revs (in the turbo lag part of the power curve) if the turbo isn't kicking in the engine will have to rev harder to reach velocity as torque will be lost with no turbo assisting things. Might also explain the noise?
