MadBaz Posted September 28, 2006 Report Posted September 28, 2006 The Haynes comic has some reasonably detailed pics on removing door cylinders, Chapter 11 pages 11 & 12. It is possible to replace the cylinder housing if its broke, did this on mine as key just spun round and round usually just opening the windows not the locks  sorry I forget the part no, but Frauds will order them for you, don't let them talk you into new cylinders etc. Quote
greg_68 Posted September 28, 2006 Report Posted September 28, 2006 The tag broke off the back of my drivers lock tumbler(common fault I think) rendering it useless. As a quick fix I swapped the two front handles over, easy job. I never unlocked the car from the passenger door so it didn't matter. Funnily enough was still like it when I dumped it. Every now and then a new whole set comes up on Ebay for about Quote
muffking Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 Mine has broke on the drivers door too. I broke it when removing my soleniod as it stopped working. How does the handle remove as I may as well swap them over if it's an easy DIY. Quote
El Dingo Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 These are Mk2...handle.pdflock.pdf Quote
muffking Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 That's quality. I should be able to pinpoint which part I need and buy it from VW now :ph34r:Can't see how to remove my old external door handle though. Quote
shelbournes Posted October 1, 2006 Author Report Posted October 1, 2006 thanks for the schemes ...so handy ....am waiting for a key and lock/handle from ebay .....so might have the problem solved soon .... A word of advice to you all ...it would seem that a major causeof locks snapping is partly a fault of the key I have just sanded mine down (lightly sanded)as the edges are a litle wornand hey presto ...they slide in and out fantasticallyi was sarting to feel that the passenger sidewas getting a little hard to open and nowbrilliant...so this may be worth a try ...lightly sand the edge down ...as this seams to have themost benefit ....belive me it works regards and thanks to all those who helped especially those diagramsshelbournes Quote
muffking Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 Just to add to that. I managed to remove my door handle today by removing one of the torx bolts on the edge of the door above the latch, this then allowed me to slide the handle towards the front of the car before pulling it away from the car. All I had to do then was to undo the bolts for the solenoid which allowed the handle to come away from the car completely. Swapping the handles over cured my problem with the locks, although I still need to buy a drivers solenoid ( Quote
shelbournes Posted October 9, 2006 Author Report Posted October 9, 2006 Right finally done it ...No problems at all ...changed the barrel in the lock to the existing one which is betterCan honestly say seamed a doddle the only hard part is to get the spring back in ....In the manual it states that you have to turn it 180%this is not the case ...just make sure the clip on the spring goes either side ...works fine then they are for MK2 not the original galaxy ...so your locks may not be the same ...they are very sinular though thanks for those techs ...they were soooo usefulKind regards ....mark Right finally done it ...No problems at all ...changed the barrel in the lock to the existing one which is betterCan honestly say seamed a doddle the only hard part is to get the spring back in ....In the manual it states that you have to turn it 180%this is not the case ...just make sure the clip on the spring goes either side ...works fine then they are for MK2 not the original galaxy ...so your locks may not be the same ...they are very sinular though thanks for those techs ...they were soooo usefulKind regards ....mark Quote
El Dingo Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 Great stuff. Did you take any photos while you were doing the work? If you did they can be put in the FAQ... Quote
