  1. My 1.9 Tdi 2003 Sharan windscreen has started to mist up pretty bad first thing in the morning and it is taking an age to clear. I have recently changed the pollen filter (old one was perfectly dry but filthy). Current scenario; Car is parked at night pointing downhill. Car doesn't really warm up for most of its journeys. The air con has stopped working (doesn't blow cold). has anyone had the same problem, I was thinking that maybe water has pooled inside the heater ducts somewhere and is causing the problem. Can anyone tell me where and how to check if the air con drain is clear. Many Thanks I have tried to search for a thread but I keep getting flood control enabled!
  2. Thanks for the response, How much do the top bearings cost typically. I usually give all work to VW dealer to carry out, is it an easy diy, or do I need spring compressors etc. If I do it will have to go to the main agents for repair.
  3. Good point about DIY but I am very lucky to have an excellent VW main agent who pick up/drop off the car and are 100% honest with all their work. I wouldnt want to work on my Sharan although I am pretty experienced DIY on cars, always had the view with cam belts that let the main agent carry out the work and if they make a mess of it its their problem not mine. I have always believed that genuine parts are better quality than copy parts, is this true as the genuine parts only appear to be about a 50% dearer.
  4. Hi, I put up with the same irritating vibration and squeaking from the alternator area on my Sharan 1.9tdi 95,000 mles. Replaced the belt and tensioner but this made no difference. On the motorway one day I got the warning 'alternator workshop' and ignored it for a subsequent 3 months, the result. One evening wife drives the car onto drive making the most god awful noise ever, look under bonnet, release tension on drivebelt and hey presto the pulley fell off! oops off to the VW main agent for repairs, thank god it fell off on the drive. total cost for repair
  5. My 1.9 tdi 03 Sharan went into the local main VW agents for its cambelt service, whilst this was being done I was advised the water pump had failed. Anyway 1 New cambelt + tensioners 1 new water pump coolent drained and replaced (yes they didnt put the old back) perfect service,100% satisfied and wow much quieter in the cabin. I would always give this very important job to the main agent (if you have one you can trust) as all VW work is guranteed for two years, god eh and worth every pound. Just for interest how much does it cost for parts if you do it yourself and how much have people paid to get the job done at a non main agent?
  6. Hi, I have a rather annoying noise that has recently developed. As the road wheel is turned when the car is static there is an annoying creak which is coming from the top of the strut. If I hold the spring whilst the steering wheel is turned I can feel and hear a creaking sound which sounds like a dry bush. Any ideas welcome.
  7. Thanks for the reply, Car is about to go in for new cam belt, will definately ask them to check when work is being carried out. Just one queation on the battery. If there is bags of power to spin the engine, is it not true to say that there is enough power to run the electrics as well Thanks
  8. Hi, Here is a simple test to find out what is kaput. Find a large open area (supermarket car park after its closed). Wind down both front windows. Put your Galaxy onto full left hand lock and accelerate hard in first gear in a full circle. Do you hear any clicking or knocking if yes either outer cv joint is kaput. Put Galaxy on full right hand lock and accelerate hard in first gear in a full circle Do you hear any clicking or knocking if yes either outer cv joint is kaput. If no to the above then find a roundabout and again with windows down drive round (any rumble now could indicate wheel bearing failure), bit more awkward to check the right hand wheel bearing but find a long tight left hand bend. If no to all above it could be rather more expensive! I once had a wheel bearing give way on me as I went round a roundabout and it gave such a loud bang followed by heavy knocking vibration I thought the wheel was coming off. Hope this helps
  9. Hi, If I leave my 2003 Sharan 1.9 TDi (115) at idle for 5 - 10 minutes there is a strong smell of ethnol coolant from the rear. It cannot be smelt from the front or the sides, and the coolant level doesn't appear to drop. Anyone know of a coolant weakness on these models. Would like an idea before the car is sent to main agents for its next service. Thanks
  10. Hi, My 2003 sharan TDi (115bhp) used to start first flick of the key but is gradually taking longer to start. This can be when its cold or warm. Has recently been to VW dealer for a check up (put on test deck for error codes) but no codes reported. The engine may turn over for 1-2 seconds (max) and then start. Once running it performs fine (maybe a little more sluggish than a year ago but can't be absolutely certain on this). Just want to know if there is something the Main agent should have checked for as I did mention it to them at the time they checked for other problems. It used to start almost instantaniously. Any advice appreciated Oh it is on it's original MaF at 94000 miles
  11. Hi all, new to the forum. I have a 2003 1.9tdi Sharan 90,000 miles which has just recently developed an annoying noise when cold. I will attempt to describe it (there was a thread somewhere on this forum but I can't find it again!) Here goes Start engine, put into first gear (no problems with selecting gear or clutch take up,rattles or vibrations) Pull away up hill (turbo whistles happily) Lift off accelerator, putting down clutch to go for next gear and : There's the noise, sounds like a dry bearing but only ever hear it 4 times as it slows and gets quieter (whish, whish, whish, whish) best I can describe the noise It will make the noise if I put my foot hard down and then lift off the accelerator as I press the clutch down (any gear includng reverse), and it doesent matter what speed I am doing, the noise is the same pitch and speed until it can no longer be heard. It lasts for several gearchanges (typically about 2 minutes of driving then stops!) Once engine has warmed up this noise never appears again unless the car is left for over a hour and it may come back once. The car starts first time every time, is clean in every gear (typically clonky selection though), pulls well right through the rev range every gear and uses next to no oil that I can tell. Oh and if I rev the engine when cold whilst static there is no trace of this sound. Any info would be appreciated as its like an itch I can't scratch and its bugging me.
