Hi Folks!....seem to be in bother with the Sharan again! Was driving out of my driveway this afternoon when there was a muted bang, and the engine started to really shake!! The engine idles and revs ok when in neutral, and is fine in reverse gear....but even slipping the clutch in a forward gear produces a severe shake in the engine. BTW the timing belt and clutch have both been changed in the last 600 miles or so....Anyone seen this before?? Geoff

Hi All!! Starter now repaired, car still difficult to start when hot. The engine starts perfectly when cold, starts fine too when at 90 degrees.....I've found that letting the engine cool to about 65 degrees, then the engine has to be cranked for about 15 seconds for it to start. No smoke, so I suspect the problem is electronic. The temperature sensor was replaced at the same time as the thermostat.....I'm thinking I might have a software problem. Not sure that I can try next, there must be some way to test the ecu.....Much scratching of head!! Geoff

Keen to put this one to bed!! Today my local mechanic was driving the Sharan when the starter failed....after I stopped laughing...we are having the starter reconditioned on Monday! Am 99.9% sure this will fix the starting problem. Geoff

Can anyone tell me how the turbo boost pressure and ambient air pressure are monitored on the 110bhp AFN engine, via the diagnostic socket?

I had a really annoying rattle in my sunroof too...one of the plastic guides at the side of the sunroof had simply come loose! Geoff

Update on my last post.....Have been using Sharan today, no starting problems at all. Dont want to get my hopes up too early, but I cant see what the connection between the thermostat change and the improvement in hot starting might be!! Geoff PS Just currently running a few tests on the Sharan....Will warm up the engine till the fan comes on, switch off engine, let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes, then try restarting...if all ok, will drink the bottle of wine that a customer supplied today as a thank you!

Not sure what the fault status is at present!....Have replaced the thermostat with another new one, temperature now normal.... Have not been driving the Sharan much over the weekend. will be out and about today, so will report back later....trying to avoid buying another new filter unless im absolutely sure of a result. Geoff

Thanks for your replies....have checked the tightness of the connections, funnily enough a suggestion has been made ....try a genuine vw-audi branded filter! This effected a cured to the same prob for someone else!!....all this is getting expensive.

Hi All, Have recently aqquired a 1999 Sharan TDi...it used to start on the button every time. Now after a fuel filter change, it has to be cranked a bit, when hot , particularly if its only stopped for a few minutes, eg at its MOT yesterday!! Anyone had this before, im a bit suspicious of the Fram filter....forgot to say, also that the thermostat was also replaced. (with a faulty one) Engine running at 66degrees...measured with an infrared thermometer.

thanks wolfie....didnt know the Beta/Gamma was used in the Mk1....My 1998 Passat had a Gamma in it , but it had blue illumination. Did they do a different version with green illumination, to match the dash lighting? Tried an old Blaupunkt Canberra in it earlier, didnt work for some reason. It did work in the 1997 Galaxy!! Wiring must be different....Can Bus I think...need to do my homework on this one!!

Its a S spec (basic) with remote locking...1999, with standard aircon etc Geoffc
-
The Ir and RF horse shoe blades are interchangeable...done that... to remove a chip from a non remote key, use a pen knife....if type numbers match on chips....should be ok....just about to find out for sure....once the timing belt is changed!! BTW electronics engineer....if I foul up I will let you know!! geoffc

Hi Folks, Bought a 1997 Galaxy GLX 90 bhp diesel a few weeks ago..... nearly everything that can be faulty on a Galaxy, was faulty. (sunroof worked!!) Spent a lot of time on it , got everything working, except for aircon...Today my friendly VW agent, tho has supplied me with about 12 new VWs in the past 9 years..rings my mobile. Turns out he has a 1999 Sharan arriving next week as a trade in with 100k on it, as it was their demo at a time, he thinks it is prob 110bhp Diesel, one owner etc.....Should I ditch my now working Galaxy...slightly battered, for a mostly pristine 1999 car and start all over again fixing faults?? Full service hist....might not be so bad.....but it IS a MK1!! Whatdayathink folks??? Geoff
