ok i think i need to clarify a lot. jacked the gal each side up and dropped her into drive. n/s seems ok, ie no noise etc. o/s well different story here. drop into drive and instead of the wheel going round it sort of seems to be pulling towards centre of car. feels like perhaps the torque converter or diff is permanantly locked. as soon as you re/apply the brake and stop any movement the engine shudders to a halt. however engage drive and the car pulls forward as if no clutches within gearbox are slipping just full on drive. when engine is off you can push the car about with no noise at all so think its either torque converter or diff. any one got any ideas to remedy?

hi again thanks for a reply have now rolled around the floor with it a bit now. cannot work out if its driveshaft or auto gearbox any light/thoughts to be shed? ie could a driveshaft lock the box?

hi all. am hoping someone can help me with this problem. 1998 1.9tdi.auto. last night on turning left the gal sort of came "alive"and decided to attempt a linford christie to the end of the road {yeah bout 100 yards} when i say "alive" i mean a sudden surge of power accompanied by the sounds of either a bag of bolts underneath or someones cat franticly trying to escape from the undershield. it was raining so left it until today. took for little test drive and i mean little, did not get out of the close. starts fine put it into drive and its off, its not overrervving it still ticks over the same but wants to literally roar off. dropped it back into reverse and engine stopped. restarted same thing happened with a bit of noise when dropped into reverse engine stopped dead again. any ideas need help here ta doubles

hi. i am hoping you can enlighten me a little. i have a 98 tdi and am getting the same noise at the same speeds, however i have an auto gear box you do not say if your is. can you let me know? thanks. doubleone

hi, am uncertain if this may help you but........... may 2005 bought a 1998 1.9 tdi galaxy has run intermittently like a pig on occasions but when its good its etc etc . 3 weeks ago i happened to bump into a mini cab driver and got chatting at the pumps as you do same model year and so on. asked him how many sensors he had replaced etc etc. reply was, you are in a shell garage have you not noticed how much better your gal runs the day after you filled it at a shell station. lots and lots of memory recalls and....... yep for the last three weeks have kept it full of shell diesel and am thinking of phoning the guiness book of records powers up response is up no hesitation until we get down to a quarter tank, fill up and no problem again old minicab drivers god bless {only when not moving} whats to lose?

hi i have a 98 1.9 tdi auto and have had the very same problem. i found that moving from park to neutral and moving the vehicle with the obligatory foot out of the door solved it. i think it must be a positioning sensor fault. hope it works for you as well as it does for me when this happens
