Gregers - yes, I recall something about air feed and/or pipe on nearside pillar so i will investigate that area. chrispb123456 - I agree about fumes going backwards out under the car. With the car stationary, I can't detect any fumes coming in through the air vents (it's difficult to sniff around yourself when you're driving!) Thanks for comments, I'll investigate further. Problem is the wife now has the Galaxy now that I've got a company Focus so I don't get to drive it enough during the week. Will report back when I've investigated further. Cheers.

Hi - Long time since I have posted. Have spent several hours reading through Aux Heater posts plus others on fumes in car etc. My problem is fumes inside car - no visible signs of smoke though. The aux heater appears to work OK, slight puff of smoke on start but otherwise seems to come on/off all as expected. Having no desire to drop the heater just for the hell of it, does anyone think this is an aux heater problem or is it more likely to be smell resulting from faulty injector or similar? Glad to see the forum is still excellent as it always has been. Kev

Last week whilst crossing a busy road junction, I lost all gear selection and was RAC recovered home. You could stir the gearstick round like stirring soup!. Having searched this forum, I checked all the gear selector cables and everything was working OK including the mechanism on top of the gearbox. Suffering the indignity of a second trip on a low loader to my local (non-Ford) garage, they found a sheared bolt on the selector sleeve/linkage inside the gearbox. Now repaired OK but the bolt head has been lost into the gearbox! Looking back at the service history, it seems the same thing happened 2 years ago and was repaired at a main dealer. Two questions .... Is this another achilles heel of the Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra range (although I've not heard of it before)? How worried should I be about probably 2 bolt heads floating around in my gearbox? Hopefully the sump is big enough that they sit at the bottom in the oil!

Help Please....not Sure
kevinp replied to fivenecks's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hi Fivenecks. I have a similar problem (or is it a problem?). My S-reg 1.9Tdi suffers similarly, no degrading of performance but is very flat and sluggish when you put your foot down. I've tried disconnecting the MAF sensor but it makes no difference. Monitoring the various threads on this website, there seems a differing opinion as to whether a "dead MAF" situation should show an improvement or no difference when it's disconnected. I don't know whether I've got a problem or not, maybe I'm expecting too much after driving the company Focus Tdi. Trying a swap with someone else's Tdi or swapping MAF's is probably the way to assess it. -
Thanks Chaps!

After detecting a grinding noise when turning right, a search of this site convinced me that it was a problem with the anti-roll bar droplinks. And Yes!, it was :o ....but it didn't need an expert to spot the problem - the top ball joint (suspension leg end) had come apart and the droplink was hanging by its bottom mounting (and I assume was rubbing on the wheel when turning). Rushed up to my local Fraud dealer and

Not sure about 2007R but I fitted a hands free kit to my 2006R. Couldn't find any info searching on the web but I posted a sketch on this site for the 2006R after I'd fitted it.. See the following link or do a search on this site by "mobile phone". Mobile Phone Topic This thread also gives some handy tips as to how to find which pin is the phone mute (I used a lead with a 1K resistor in-line and progressively dab'd on each pin till I found it). I fitted the Nokia CARK-91 kit. If you have any problems when you come to do it, just post the questions here! PS. Make sure you have the correct antenna/aerial. Different networks use different bands. Panorama antennas Panorama Antennas are very helpful and have a good website.

Hands-free Mobile Phone Kits
kevinp replied to Taliska's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
To Mussey 1, sorry for the delay in replying....... How did you attach the cradle to the dash? Did you use a facia bracket or screw the cradle directly to the dash? Also where did you place the control box? I bought a universal fascia bracket for -
Hands-free Mobile Phone Kits
kevinp replied to Taliska's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Don't know about Ghias, I only aford a GLX! Obviously depends on phone type but I fiited a Nokia CAK-91 kit 3 months ago (this takes the 6210 type phones and similar, although different versions are available for other Nokia phones). This is the proper kit, completely hands-free, wired into vehicle electrics and also mutes the radio. Typically -
Drivers Door Lock
kevinp replied to norwichbluenose's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
My drivers door lock is also very crunchy and gritty at this very moment. This happened earlier in the year too so sprayed it through the keyhole with WD-40. Now it's happening again, I've bought some 3-in-1 spray (with added PTFE!) which I intend to try (as soon as it stops raining). -
Replying to your own posting - how sad can you get! Cambelt was replaced OK. Original one (VW part no.) had 3 small cracks in it but not as bad as I had expected. Feel better now. :)
-
My Galaxy has been main dealer serviced from new under it's 1 and only previous owner. Checking through the full service history I can find no record of a cambelt change. :D I popped into the dealer concerned and he too could find no record of the belt being changed (and couldn't care a toss about it either!). Suffice to say I am going elsewhere for my (overdue) 90K service. I think I may write to Ford Customer Relations. Some comparitive service costs for info..... Axel - glad you managed to fit the rails OK. Wish I had had a cutting chart for the rubber strips, took me 3 goes to get it right. You obviously got a good price from e.bay. Makes a Galaxy look much nicer doesn't it! B)

Think it will be along time before I can afford a 130PS - I'm still paying for this one!

Sorry to drag this one up again. I was just about to top up my oil for the first time (first time I've ever noticed it's used any after 6000 miles under my ownership) so I checked both handbook and this site for oil grades. Handbook says SAE 10W-40 whilst previous comments from Sher (above) suggest 5W-40 for a TDi “A problem I have had is that the agent's service department used it on my 1.9TDI when it definitely says 5W-40's in the BOOK The oil ratings that we recommend are as follows: 2.3 DOHC Petrol - 5W-30 2.8 24V Petrol - 5W-40 or XR+ High Performance 10W-40 1.9 TDI Diesel - 5W-40 ” Is 5W-40 only for the Mk2 facelift model (mine's a Mk1) etc? What is the correct grade for a Mk1 1998 110 Tdi please?

When I pull away, I hear a distinct whistling noise as the revs go up from zero to about 2000rpm. The note gets higher with engine revs until it disappears. It has always done it in the 6 months I have had the car. Is this normal? (I assume it is turbo whine) or am I just getting paranoid after reading so many problems on this site?

Shhhhhh ............. it's a company phone so it doesn't make any difference,

Nige - sorry for the long time in tying up this subject. I have now also successfully fitted a Nokia CARK-91 hands free kit to my Galaxy and it works a treat. ;) Just a word of warning to anyone - make sure you have the correct antenna! I used an on-glass one from Panorama Antennas of London (see their web site, very informative) but initially I got the wrong one (note that Orange phones are on 1800MHz whereas Vodafone & O2 are on 900MHz). The technical man at Panorama was extremely helpful and even did me a good deal on the correct antenna. I thoroughly recommend Panorama - an excellent and British company. Now for anyone that wants it, the following is the mute connection on a 2006R radio (the radio shuts down and says "phone" on the LCD display).
-
Interesting - I was considering fitting a CD changer to my 2006R but assuming you have the lead etc, how do you control the CD player as there are no buttons even referring to a CD player? ;) (Alternatively I might fit a Sony system that I removed from an old Vauxhall before I sold it - but I rather like Ford radios).
-
Thanks Nige F for the above. I will experiment to determine the mute connection. I was thinking of taking the power feeds from the cigar lighter connections (nice and local to the radio). Out of interest, where did you fix the speaker - is there something nice and solid to screw into in the passenger footwell? - Kevin.
-
Can't help with the previous posting but I am shortly to fit a Nokia hands free kit (cark91) to my 1998 Galaxy - not the easiest car to route wires through!. Looking at the back of the 2006R radio, it doesn't seem to have an obvious mute connection (unless it is one of the pins on the 3rd plug-in connector which is not fitted). Anyone know whether there is a mute facility on the 2006R or where I can find more wiring details on this radio model?. I plan to troll the internet later to see what I can find.

After school holidays with bikes. luggage etc etc in the boot, I have managed to inevitably scratch the silver paint off my rear bumber leaving some delightful black marks. On a casual visit to Halfords, I noticed some "3-pen touch up kits" which seem pretty comprehensive. There were 2 silver colours, Stratos and something else (sorry, don't have the details with me) with "manufacturers colour code numbers". Where do I find these on the Galaxy? I don't see an obvious paint code on the various VIN plates in engine bay and door pillars (as I remember from my old Escort days). Am I better off visiting a Ford dealer to get touch up paints?

:P Having just done 1000 miles+ through the Yorkshire Dales, my 1998 1.9TDi (110) behaved impeccably coping with all the hills etc. However, obviously not wanting to return home, my previously reported loss of power returned on the M11. Limited to about 60mph, I pulled off at Stansted and turned the engine off for about 3 mins. Started up again and all is once more hunky-dory! (I was hoping the fault would still be there so that I could disconnect the MAF sensor). QUESTION: is it OK to remove the MAF connection while the engine is still running? When school hols are over (relief) and I have completed several work trips to Newcastle (by air, not Galaxy), I will investigate the various tips given (including removing MAF & cleaning EGR) hopefully to get to the root of the problem.
