Tdi 130 Sluggish Starting
burundi replied to ninjakev's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Any luck with this ninjakev? I am having what sound like exactly the same symptoms with an older tdi 90. Glowplugs have been removed and tested on another battery (not my cars battery) and they work fine, they all get bright red all within a few seconds of being connected. We've had the bus bar off the glowplugs and confirmed that we are getting 12v to each glowplug (11.8v roughly if I remember rightly) The coolant temp sensor (four pin affair that sends the temp to the dash gauge and the ECM) has been replaced with a brand new one, made things even worse :16: At the moment we have a variable resistor plugged into the connectors that would normally be connected to the sensor, giving a resistance of approx 4.5 Kohms back to the ECM. This seems to fool it (according to vag.com) that the coolant temp is about 1.8 degrees celsius and the bus starts lumpy, but it at least starts, more or less first or second time. Not tried putting jump leads on and trying to start it, will have to try that on friday to see if it makes a difference. Once it has got going the car runs fine though and I haven't noticed any smoking, but then I struggle to be behind myself at the best of times :16: -
Not Starting Too Well After M.o.t

To update further on this it looks like it is the engine temperature sensor that has failed. We disconnected it and tried to start the engine and it was still rough but it started better so the ECU was compensating and this improved things somewhat. We then tried a 10Kohm variable resistor on the connector (instead of the connector being plugged into the temp sensor) and we set the resistance to approx 4.5Kohm, this is the same sort of resistance that the temp sensor should be giving when the engine is cold, the engine then started very well, almost normally. So time to get myself down to the dealers and pick up a new temp sensor and hopefully the bus will be back to normal \o/. -
It's possible the motor thingy wasn't centred when you put it back together, so you may find it goes a lot further up than the passengermirror but not as far down, possibly... I had an altercation with a BMW X5 on a country lane, I had to snap my cover back onto my mirror, they had to pick the pieces of theirs up from the road. That'll teach to come onto my side of the road like a big bully.

Not Starting Too Well After M.o.t

Not sure, I would expect performance issues in general if either of those were going knackered but the performance seems quite good (for what it is). I am not ruling anything out yet though :) -
Not Starting Too Well After M.o.t

Some new info now. managed to get a mechanic friend to look at it last night, he checked all the glowplugs, checked the feed to the glowplugs, checked the temp sensor was connected ok. We couldn't test properly as the engine was warm so it wasn't igniting the glowplugs anyway, tested it this morning witha cold engine and the glowplugs were being ignited (sent a 12v charge) for at least 6 or 7 seconds, this indicates the temp sensor is ok, the feed to the glowplugs is ok and he is getting a good read from the actual glowplugs so we're not sure what the issue is as it doesn't seem to be related to the plugs. Next step is to check for air being sucked in somewhere he says. Any other ideas? -
Not Starting Too Well After M.o.t

Cheers, the oil was last changed around november'ish and I checked it at the beginning of the month and it has barely used a drop. I think the oil light may be a red herring though, because it works fine when the engine is warmed up i'm wondering if it might be a glowplug problem? -
Not Starting Too Well After M.o.t

HI, wonder if anyone can suggest what might be causing this problem? Before M.O.T the Sharan (1.9tdi 90bhp Manual) was running ok but not great, little sluggish at times although hard to notice as it was a gradual deterioration. Started perfectly everytime though, ho hassles, even if the locks were frozen solid, once i'd got into it the bus would start first time every time. After M.O.T, the next day after the bus has been left overnight, it is a very lumpy start, catches first time but is lumpy for about 5 or 6 seconds and then it catches and is fine. I notice performance seems better though and I'm suddenly getting better MPG to and from work??? The starting issue seems to be getting worse however, this morning It didn't catch first time, second time it started but was very lumpy and the oil pressure light was flashing on and off whilst it was turning over. Once it had caught it was fine again. When I stopped at work I turned it off, left it for about 15 seconds and then tried to start it again and it started perfectly. I have spoken to a mate who says the only thing they would have done to it on the M.O.T is to rev it quite hard for the emissions test. I normally have no need to take it 3k rpm, I expect the tester will have nearly red lined it for a bit to get it warm before taking the emissions readings. any help appreciated. TIA Burundi. -
I've been doing this for a while now as well. 50/50 is the most i have run, I usually do about 1 third veg oil (rapeseed is one of the best apparently) and 2 thirds diesel. It runs a bit sluggish and acceleration is down a bit (it takes an ice age to get to 70 instead of just a millenia now) but not so bad that I am not going to stop doing it. It's not illegal to use like red diesel is, so there are no issues if you get stopped and your tank dipped. It is a self regulating process, you are supposed to fill out the customs and excise fuel form yourself and send it off with payment for the vat on the fuel you have used. The Police and C&E are not really too concerned about people using veg oil as it will light up the dash on most later models and cause all sorts of problems. It's only really suitable for use on older models like mine. (96 Sharan tdi) that use only the finest 1950's tractor technology. Referencing an earlier post I think it will be the Bosch pumps that can cope with veg oil, some Lucas pumps have problems pumping diesel, never mind anything more viscous.

Wanted: Mk1 Window Switch
burundi replied to burundi's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Cheers for the help, I've tried some different searches and there are indeed some on ebay. This board used to show your vehicle info, you can still set it in your profile. An update must have knocked that customisation off. Oh well, details added to my sig as well. :D -
Wanted, a window switch for a mk1 sharan, can be in working or none working condition, so long as at least one direction (up or down) works then I can use it to repair my own drivers door window switch. My drivers door 'up' button failed one day so I dismantled the switch, reseated all the metal connectors but somehow managed to lose one them, So I can now put the front windows up but can only put the drivers side down. I am prepared to send a self addressed container with the necessary postage and pay a reasonable purchase price for anyone who can provide me with a switch. I don't have the time to hunt around scrap yards and there is nothing on fleabay. :/ Ta Burundi.

If this is an ISO or NRG file why are you extracting the files and then using Nero to burn them? If it is a valid image then start Nero, cancel the Nero wizard when it comes up, then go to the 'Recorder' option on the top menu and in there should be 'Burn Image', choose the image file you have downloaded and let it get on with it, this should create the cd/dvd correctly. If this is a film you have downloaded and it is only 700/800mb then it may want to be burnt to a CD and not a DVD. If that fails to work then let us know what files are in the image.

It's a bit out of your way I'm afraid, Tintmaster in Preston, Lancs. I don't know what prices will be like down in the big smoke but mine cost about

I had mine done earlier this month as I have no aircon, typically it hasn't been sunny since. The job was well done, the only downside is the glue they use has problems sticking around bits of the 2 rear windows and the back window as they have the black gradiated dots on the surround of them, I managed to get it looking a bit better by running my finger over the film to push it more firmly onto the little dots, it doesn't look too bad at all now, noticeable but not glaringly obvious. The important thing is that it keeps the effects of the sun at bay, as soon as we get some sun up north I'll let you know how successful it has been. I think they used Lumar film at the place I had it done. I had all the windows done, lightest tint on the two fronts and the second darkest available on the rear five and a sun strip on the windscreen, they even did the little quarterlights in the front A pillars. Cost me

Aahhh, I hadn't considered the calibrations might be different, I would have to make sure I got the face from a 90bhp Gal Diesel to be safe wouldn't I.

I currently have a 96 VW Sharan. The Speedo has 20 mph increments on it and I find it it irritating. I noticed recently on an ebay auction that the mk1 Gal has 10mph increments on the speedo and was wondering if anyone knows if I can get hold of just the printed dial rather than replacing the whole speedo? Presumably a breakers would be the best bet for a gal speedo to take the printed film from? Ta Burundi

All down to safe levels of visibility, uk.gov have decided that with the dim weather and dark nights in winter that it is unsafe to have any level of tint over 25% on your front and side windows (front sides, not rear sides), this means that 75% of light must be allowed to pass through the glass. As Strouf says the major factor is the films UV blocking abilities, not the tint level. Tints are there to make the car look good, provide privacy and where legal, to reduce the glare of the sun but they do little to prevent the heat of the sun. See here for more info I am getting my Sharan tinted this month as I have no air con. I am going for the scond darkest Lumar film on the rear 5 windows and the lightest on the fronts. It will make the fronts technically illegal but with the bus having so much glass it shouldn't be too obvious, also getting sun strip across the top of the windscreen.

Just for info... I recently bought a Tonneau (Luggage Cover) off Ebay, it came, as per sods law, without any fixing brackets. I went to my local VW dealer and ordered the brackets in the correct interior colour for my Sharan and they came to approx

Didn't by any chance start with the drops in temperature, around early nov. did it?
-
My 96 VW GL has heated mirrors but only the drivers side works. One of these days I may get around to checking out why...
-
Well I had no idea diesels were that heat efficient, I'm learning more about the bus all the time :)

I don't know that much about engines at all but I can't imagine the coolant quickly loosing 40 degrees simply because the blower is on. Over what time period are we taling about, 2 mins, 5, 10 30? Perhaps over an extended period the blower could take enough heat out the coolant but with the engine running and _some_ load being placed on it there should be enough heat generated to keep it above 50. But then again, I could be completely wrong :/
-
It was definitely too hot to touch, I tapped it and decided that straight away  It was very faint but it was certainly spinning away for a bit after I pulled the keys out. TBH I really didn't hear it at all whilst driving, it's hard to hear much over the noise of the engine and all the creaking and rattling though :/
-
Having read every post on this thread with a sense of dread because I thought it seemed my Shaz was too old to have a booster heater or if it did it there was no chance it was going to be a working one, I decided to get under her last night and had a nosy after my journey home from work. Sure enough there was a booster heater, right where it should be, and even more surprising the thing seemed to be working (I presume a hot exhaust on it means it's working?!?) It's a 96, P Reg'd Sharan GL.

Haven't checked if it is the cable or the speaker yet, I was going to replace the speakers eventually anyway as they are getting on a bit.
-
Thanks, do you know if it shows how to remove the panels in the Haynes manual for the galaxy/sharan? I'd prefer to remove them without breaking lots of clips <_< If it shows how I'll order a copy. Also, without having to remove the door cards to check, does anyone know what size speakers go in rear doors? or they 4" 5" or 6". I have a dead speaker I need to replace. TIA Burundi :(
