Tried that, poured old oil through .Pretty sure it is behind the crown-wheel opposite side to drain hole. Just my luck.

Hi folks. Cant get the bolt out have to get gearbox taken out (bummer more expense) What oil do i need for it, bloke in local auto factors gave me Millers UN automatic transmission & power steering oil. Is this correct i have a 5 speed manual 99 T plate. :(

Hi again just to ask anyone know if dealer does parts for the selector mechanism? Need new bolt and shaft, thread looks dodgey in old one. PS, still trying to find bolt given up for today,NEED FOOD :(

Ive drained the oil no sign of it near the plug hole. im not going to risk the gearbox by leaving it in there. im going to get on of those long flexible retriever tools with a magnet on the end and fish round through the selector hole hopefully i will find it by chance. :(

Found problem.Selector bolt has disappeared into the depths of the gearbox,the whole bolt has come out.anyone have any ideas on how to get it out without removing the box from the car? Cheapest quote to remove and refit box is

Neil Wiles-- Thanks for that m8 i think you have nailed it. When i drove it back in second gear i heard a sound from the box like something rubbing on gear teeth ( i bet its the bolt head). Will try to remove selector tomorrow (sun) and see if thats the cause,then work out how to retrieve the head.Post result tomorrow nite.Cheers. :(

Thought i would mention,while i had the stat out i put my finger in the hole and felt the water pump impeller it is still attached and spinning with the pulley so at least i know thats ok . :(

The selectors move about but with no sounds from the gearbox or any "feel" like its not connected to anything in the box.

Haven't got a baseball bat will a lump of 4x2 do ha ha.

Yeah,checked cables- gearstick moves selector so i reckon selector has broke in gearbox.Been quoted 700 for gearbox and clutch fitted by Mr Clutch,is this good?

Changed stat but only got to end of the road lost all gears see "No Gears" just posted it in desperation.Cheers

Hi folks got a big prob for you. Pulled out of the drive into second gear "fine" went to change into third bang gearstick went floppy.Checked cables there fine,.Its stuck in second gear so managed to drive round the block home.The selector on top of the gearbox moves back and forward when the stick is moved so i suspect the selector mechanism in the box has sheared.Is this a big job or better to get another box? any idea how much? Many thanks in advance

Cheers m8 glad u sorted it in the end. The simple jobs are usually the ones that give u the most grief. Had a mk5 escort b4 gal and decided to strip and clean carb one weekend ended up shearing fuel union off and had to cycle 5 miles to nearest scrappy on sons bike to find another one did luckily but a**e was sore for a week after. Fun aint it!

Done about 100 miles since fitting belt with no problems.I didnt realise what a pig of a job it could be,give me escorts and astras any day.MANY thanks to all who helped,much appreciated :rolleyes: ^_^ :D

had a good long look at this and come to decision that stat is stuck closed.Both front and rear heaters blow hot all the time,if temp gauge rises i turn on heater and it goes down so water is being pumped round engine and to heaters which are acting in place of radiator to cool water.Ive got a new stat for the weekend so i will post findings.
