  1. I too have a flange type towbar and the parking sensors do sound DEPENDING on the type and position of the tow ball cover! If the parking sensors don't sound when there's no towbar cover then you may find that adjusting the cover when fitted (or changing type) will solve the problem.
  2. I had my tow bar 'professionally' fitted and the cables run to the right hand side of the car and then up into the area in which the jack is stored through a huge vent.
  3. Is this the required tool? ... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=120387998610
  4. Oops, I meant it's an OBD-II connection.
  5. I've read about the special VAG COM lead which would seem to be an ODBC lead with built in dongle so the Ross-Tech software recognises it and so enable full functionality. I don't know how Ross-Tech are able to know the full VAG communications protocol. Perhaps it's in the public domain or perhaps they reverse engineered it after looking at the communication packets sent between a proper VAG service tool and a car. Either way, why can't we do the same and create our own application that lets people buy the 'cheaper' leads and use our developed application? I'm a software engineer and I could offer to write a windows application that would use a serial port/USB and let people with any sort of lead twiddle with the various ports made available on VAG cars. Anyone got any pointers as to the VAG COM communications protocol? Any other softies out there who have comments on this as a project - it would seem quite straightforward to me but that's befoer I see the actual protocol in use. Cheers
  6. Great thanks for the info son in law will not be happy as van and vehicle excede 3500kg so will have to take the B+E test What's the MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass) of your van John? JRWR
  7. Where do I find the plate with this information on my Mk2 Galaxy? 1240Kg seems low to me. While my handbook doesn't give an unladen weight it does give a kerb weight For my car, Mk2 2004 1.9TDi (130) Galaxy Ghia. the handbook gives a kerb weight of 1724 - 2003 kg. I used the lower of these figures when matching to the van I tow which has a MTPLM of 1410kg .. so 81.7% (It's generally recommended it be no greater than 85%) Have I missed something? Cheers, JRWR
  8. I'm going to be replacing discs and pads all round soon (scheduled for 9th May!) on a '54 Galaxy 1.9TDi so if you do yours first Mike then let us know how you get on. I bought a full set of Mintex discs and pads for
  9. Wow, thanks to both of you for that advice! I'd have looked very silly if I'd stripped those screws! (I was planning to set my wrench at 135Nm and then find the point at which pulling on the shaft with all my might I could get it to click. I would then do the same but at twice the distance along the shaft to get the 270Nm!) This forum is proving invaluable - hope to be able to pay back with some pics and an account of how it all goes in a few weeks time.
  10. How do I delete a post?
  11. I'm getting set to undertake this job (front and rear discs and pads). So far I have the discs and pads, brake hose clamp, a set of 1/2" drive hex bits, tub of copper grease and the caliper rewind tool should arrive soon - total cost to me
  12. Thanks again Gregers I can now see the pics! I must have been promoted or something. I have to say they're great and I wil be referring to them. Now, next bit of advice sought, what do I need to buy!! So far, on my shopping list I have: Brake discs and pads (duh!) and having weighed up the comments for/against ebay I like the look of this deal: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GALAXY-1-9TDI-130HP-...A1%7C240%3A1318 That's all the pads and discs (Mintex) for
  13. Thanks Gregers, I've done quite a bit of research on the internet and I've found a few places. Strangely some price the discs in pairs (which of course I want!) while others price them individually .. others price them individually and then insist they be bought in pairs. I'm not sure why you're restricting the pics to people who've made a minimum number of posts. I'll hope to take some pics as I go along and I'll be doing both front and back discs and pads on a '54 1.9TDi 130PS Galaxy. It's quite a low mileage car and I wonder if the wear may be due to towing a caravan - should I be looking at uprated discs? Anyway, if I do need to make more posts then I may get to see the pics .. otherwise I'll just have to try and muddle through. JRWR
  14. How do I get to see the pictures? If I click the link it says I don't have permission. I've been told I need new discs (and pads) all round on a '54 Galaxy and the quote was about
