Looks like the spline shaft on the compressor is also worn, so I guess that leaves me with needing a new compressor!? :( The compressor is a Sanden (SD7V16) 7M3 820 803 A (YM2H 19D629 BB) which I guess is a popular one used in most other VW's from this era. I might try and source a second hand one off ebay and then try and get an air con person to fit and regas, as I imagine a new or recon one is going to be several hundreds of pounds :) ... Thanks for the info and pointers. Time to try and get it fixed now... :) Cheers, Nick

Yeah, good idea to rob the clutch off another compressor - they seem to be around 50 quid for a second hand one. I'll take a look at the spline shaft and see what it is like. I'll get the undertray back on ASAP then - I could do without any more problems on the car as it seems to be gradually falling apart! :( The other current problem I am looking at is the left hand indicator sticking on and the relay is soldered into the fuse box - Great! :)

You are spot on - the splines are rusty and almost all worn smooth. You can just make them out on the outside end. I have looked on ebay and it looks like I can get the pully clutch for around 100 quid: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VW-Volkswagen-Beetle-Golf-Audi-TT-Air-Con-Pump-Pulley-Clutch-2D0809905B-/160731128903?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item256c526447 Looks like the same clutch plate from the picture on the ebay item, but obviously I would need to investigate proper part numbers: Thanks for all the info, I'll take a look at the compressor this week and see what state the shaft splines are in. Cheers, Nick

Hi. Please could someone tell me what the part is and where it comes from - I found it resting in the undertray when I removed it to do an oil change? :) The car is a 2003 galaxy 1.9 tdi 115bhp... The car seems to drive ok, so I am guessing that it isn't a really important part (hopefully)!? Also, is it ok to drive the car without the undertray on? I need to repair it as one of the bolts has pulled through and both of the small ones near the back have ripped off :( ... Many thanks, Nick

I did fix this  By chance :D I was going to add a bit of plastic on the end to make the plunger longer and as I was doing this I found that the plunger is adjustable!! If you lower the clutch a little and then pull the clutch switch plunger out (pull quite hard) it has a ratchet type thing that allows it to adjust. Once the plunger is out as far as it will go, release the clutch lever and it will push the plunger back in and adjust it to the correct place. Hope this helps  Nick

oh, right :) Does that mean I would need to pull the whole cable from head unit to back of car (I would assume it is in the loom?) or is it just the little connector bit behind the head unit? :) As you can tell, I didn't really look properly at the cable and the radio is back in now, so am probably asking a stupid question! :)

In fact it's all pictures... apparently they paint a thousand words... :) I have added a few arrows and text to some of them. Removing bottom bit of the console - houses rear quarter electric window switches, cig lighter etc. Removing the top bit of the console - houses cup holders, radio, climate control etc. Enjoy.

Thanks chaps. Goofygolfer I think you are probably spot on. It's a 6000CD but the autochanger has been removed, so it would make sense that they probably unplugged it behind the head unit. Not too bothered about the multichanger - more of a radio person :) Anyway, thanks for the help. One less plug to worry about in the car! Cheers, Nick

Hi again :) I am trying to get my cruise control working. There is no light for the CC (not sure if there should be or not) and it don't work :) So trying to diagnose and sort it out. So far I have tested the clutch switch and brake switch which I managed to unscrew by putting my hand up on top of the pedal and disconnect: Brake switch - one switch found and it has four connectors 1-4. With 'plunger' out I think the switch is off. When I push the plunger in (this will happen when the brake pedal is up with no pressure on it) I only get some continuity across pins 1 to 4. Is this correct? I expected to find two switches, something like 1-2 for the brake light circuit and 3-4 for the CC. Would anyone be able to tell me the pinnout for the switch please? Do you think the switch is broken? Clutch switch - one switch found and it has two connectors. With 'plunger' out I think the switch is off. When I push the plunger in (clutch resting) I get continuity - so all is cool with that. ... But, there is slight play in the clutch and it would appear that when the clutch is at rest, the plunger is out - which would indicate to the control circuit that the clutch has been pressed! Haven't properly tested this, but am 95% sure this is happening. Query about the clutch switch. Above the clutch there are two holes to plug switches in. The switch I have found is in the larger hole to the right. The plunger operates against some metal on the clutch pedal lever. The hole on the left is slightly smaller (nothing was in it) and it has a 'pad' for the plunger (if there was one) to sit nicely on. Do you think someone has put the wrong clutch switch in the car? A smaller clutch switch in the left hand hole would work much better as it has a good seat for the plunger to rest on. So, in summary, I'm not sure if my brake switch is all present and correct. Also, I think the clutch switch is the wrong one in the wrong place and that could be the cause of my problems. Sorry for the long post :) Would welcome any comments on this. Also, whilst I'm here, can VAG-COM allow you to check all the switches for the cruise control? Not that I have it yet :) Thanks all! Nick

Hi all. Does anyone know when the plug circled (on the left) is for? It looks like it plugs into the back of the Radio CD player (didn't try it) but it wasn't connected (have only just purchased the car). I am guessing that it might be for the controlling the volume as the car speeds up or something. Or maybe it is for a phone kit or something :) Am I getting warm(er)? From the loom with the unconnected plug there is a fuse (circled on the right) - can't remeber what it said but might have been 3A - guess this is the fuse for whatever the plug does!? Any info much appreciated. Ta, Nick

I read a number of messages about removing the cup holders. It is VERY easy when you know how. Baffled me for about half hour and ended up pulling out the inside first before managing to push down the clips correctly! At the top of the cup holder on the left and right are the clips. Something strong and flat can be pushed in to push down the clips and then the cup holder can be removed. Now let me see if I can put my pictures of this in :) ... and anyway, enjoy - maybe it will help someone :)

New Galaxy Owner - Car Needs A Few Bits Sorting...
nickcockman replied to nickcockman's topic in New Member Introductions
ok - I have already found the PATS programming which is for the imobiliser chips (here) which is done in the ignition and up to 8 keys I believe - but I think you need two working keys to program more. The Remote programming is done in the door lock and you can add up to 4 Remote keys I believe. So I just need to find a Remote key on ebay that has the same number as mine, and also includes an imobiliser chip, and then get a blade cut to match the orig and pop that in.. All good fun  -

Good suggestion - calling is probably better to get the right thing as well  Gregers - I am just south of Cambridge, not really proper south east. There needs to be an east anglia or something :) Also, thanks for the notes about my queries. I'll dig around the forum and hopefully this will answer a lot of my questions. Thanks for the info about the keys. I found some on ebay with the right code. One thing that is puzzling me slightly is... I have one remote key and another non-remote key which both work fine. This must mean that the non-remote key has the imobiliser moulded into the plastic - is this correct? And also when you reprogram a remote key, you must also be reprogramming the imobiliser code as well? I'll keep on reading... :) Cheers, Nick -

Thanks Stevie - I keep forgetting that the Ford Galaxy is more VW than Ford  I guess on GSF you search based on the VW Sharan? -
New Galaxy Owner - Car Needs A Few Bits Sorting...

Thanks for the warm welcome :) I have already made good use of the info on here to check the parking sensors were all working correctly (turned out to be a user error  ). The 'ticking' is actually very easy to hear - sounds a bit like static electricity. These are a few of the things that I need to look into (in no particular order)... 1. Cruise control not working. The controls are on the steering wheel (user guide is from 2001 and shows it on the stick!?). Rear brake light was out when I purchased the car, but sorted that and cruise control still not working - no lights showing on the dash either (not sure if there should be light or not). The book suggests the fuse is shared with clock amongst other things, and that is ticking away nicely... 2. Climate control flashes when I put the ignition on, then stops flashing after about 10-15 seconds, which I understand means there is a fault. It seems to 'work' after finishing it's flashing, but doesn't blow cold. I am hoping it is just a regas - I might cry if the compressor has gone! Is there an easy way to check the compressor is working? 3. Rear discs look well worn. Is there a good place to get discs and pads, and how much should I be paying? Is it an easy job - changed the Vectra's a few times and that was fairly straight forward. 4. Looks like no haynes manual for MKII galaxies - is it worth getting a MKI book? Failing that might have to investigate getting t i s (am I allowed to mention that?). 5. I would like to get VAG-COM, would welcome feedback about which cable and how much of the galaxy you can diagnose with it - can it diagnose cruise control problems? :) I am assuming VAG-COM would be a really useful tool to have, especially if I intend to service and maintain the car myself. 6. Car came with one remote key, one normal, and the plastic pattern key (+some code). I am slightly confused about getting another remote key - which ones will work, can I source them cheap off ebay etc. 7. How can I find my engine number. I understand with this I can determine if it is the 115 or the 130 engine - I believe I have the 115. Still pulls exceptionally well for a little 1.9. Anyway, that is pretty much it for now :) They are my main things to work through. Car is really good, fingers crossed it will pass the MOT ok. Really impressed with the flexible seating in the back - nice touches like two levers to drop the seat backs, levers for the outside middle seats to pop them forward (might ever work with our car seats attached!). Amazingly spacious - makes the vectra look like a toy car parked next to it :) I have to admit that when backing the galaxy it feels rather bus like, but normal driving feels little different to a standard car. Cheers, Nick -
Hi all. I have been reading this forum for a while whilst trying to get hold of a galaxy. Some really useful messages. Own a Vectra at the moment, but with the fourth child on the way need we need some more seats :) Anyway, I managed to buy a private Galaxy that was in my budget. Taken a bit of a gamble on it as it doesn't have much history and the MOT had two days remaining! It's an 03 tdi Ghia 115 (well I think it is 115 - that's what autotrader said and it's got a silver badge with red round the edge!). It's in silver, just to be original and is well loosened up at 123,000 miles  Paid 4,250 for it, which hopefully will work out to be a good price. Have allocated 750 to sort any bits out on it - it has had a recent cambelt (previous owner had receipt) as the water pump failed about 10k ago. I have a few questions about various bits, but maybe this isn't the right bit of the forum to ask them :) I did attempt to put one in the questions area, but seems like I don't have permission :( Anyway, hello to all :) I'll sort my profile out as I don't think I have put much in it. Cheers for now, Nick
