father alice Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 Just got an 03 plate VW sharan with 40,000 Miles on the clock. I notice the cam hasn't been changed, although it was "inspected" by the dealer as part of the 40K service they performed. Model is 1.9TDI 130PS Reading the manual, it states 60,000 km or 4 years ie about 40,000 miles, but having spoken to VW, who checked on their system and gave an engine code of AZS (or ASZ - I can't remember!), it should be 60,000 MILES, or 4 years. - Typo in the manual? I was suprised that the distance had changed - I had only ever read 40,000 on here. Any one else been told 60,000 Miles? All that said, it is passed the 4 year mark, so I will be getting it changed anyway... Quote
searcher Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 There was a mileage change for the belt at some point but cant remember when that wasI had the exact same thing as you with my Alhambra. It had only done 30,000 mile but was four years old so i had it changed just to be on the safe side Quote
malcolm.dobell Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 I'm sure a kind soul will fill in the details, but the story goes something like this: TDI 90 and 110 engines had cam belt change at 60000miles When PD 115 was introduced, the interval was set at 60000miles, but after reports of premature failure, quickly reduced to 40000 miles. At some time in 2003 the design was changed and the interval restored to 60000 miles. Mine, a March '04 reg 130 Alhambra with 52k on the clock get done tomorrow with service and MOT; my second mortgage is lined up Quote
gregers Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 as malcolm above has said about the pd 115 bhp there was a change over in 2003 from 40000 to 60000 miles, mine was changed by fords at 56000 miles, but if its already 4 years old then your right to have it changed. Quote
Triple Trouble Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Hi, like you I bought a 130 Diesel, I'm on 53 plate though. Spent few anxious days as was geeting conflicting info on belt cahnge intervals - as the guys have said above, interval was changed to 60k with upgraded parts going into engines, May/June 2003. Some old cars may have been standing around before being registered, so would advise anyone to check with Ford/VAG with engine number to hand. Good luck and enjoy, Quote
Sher Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 Do not forget to change the water pump on those 2002/2003 or whatevermodels which have the plastic impellor. If it is a metallic one I would not bother. until every 2nd belt change.Don't ask me how to tell which it is without removing it first.Best to assume its plastic to begin with. Any decent waterpump seal should last 2 belts i.e. 120,000 miles. Pity the plastic impellor's attachment is so pathetic it does not and can only manage 73,000 miles in my case. Dreadful VW Audi parts reliability! (40,000 miles for a Cambelt!!!) The most unreliable car I have ever owned. 63,000 miles Clutch Slave cylinder.65,000 miles Off side half Shaft and Output shaft from Gearbox73,000 miles Water Pump failure Quote
davewill Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 Yeah my 2002 115TDi Galaxy was equally as unreliable 35,000 miles track rod end failure40,000 cam belt change50,000 drive shaft failure60,000 gear cable selector failure65,000 Impellor failure resulting in new water pump plus cam belt change70,000 master cylinder78,000 clutch failure78,001 Sold the bu**er :D and bought another one - 2006 115TDi Auto  Quote
roly1977 Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 so what is it for my 51 reg 115 galaxy then please Quote
MadBaz Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 Should've been done at 40k c/w tensioner then at 60k intervals Quote
malcolm.dobell Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 This week I had my cam belt changed with new water pump, MOT, 60000 mile service, brake fluid change and air con "service" all for Quote
father alice Posted February 28, 2008 Author Report Posted February 28, 2008 Well having JUST bought the car at 40K and virtually 5 yrs old, marketed as a FSH, I have agreed to the garage doing the new cam and tensioner for Quote
