Auto Gearbox Light Fused

Does anyone know how/what to remove so that I can fix it without breaking anything? At the moment, I've only removed the ciggarette ashtray, revealing the vag-com socket. I thought it used smd's and therefore never fused??

 

Anyway, any help much appreciated.

Not sure if this helps, but it should get you to the right area, as I understand it should be a bulb.

 

 

1. open ashtray and pull it up and out

2. undo bolt of selector handle

3. pull off selector lever trim

4. unclip selector lever shield

 

I think it should be visible then attached to a bit of plastic called the scale illumination bulb holder.

I guess I wont be able to drive it once its open, so do you/anybody know what type of bulb it is?, any chance i can change it to blue, like bagpuss ?? :lol:

Sorry I dont know which type it is, It's probably same as ashtray and I was quoted

when you lift off all the gearbox shield you will see an upside down "U" shaped bit of plastic with the bulb in.

this is a complete unit. need to go to ford for one.

further to what madbaz and rojtatton were saying, the bulb holder is also the start inhibit switch which is designed to prevent the car being started in gear.

You may find that after changing it that the car won't start, or you can start it but not get it into gear like rojtatton was saying. with any luck you wont get these problems but if you do, this is how i adjusted mine:

 

1. fit the bulb holder making sure that the little plastic contact unit is still in the slot (this actually clips over a spigot on the gear selector when you press the bulb holder into place. just check first that the old one isn't still clipped on the selector as it may come out of the slot when you prise off the old bulb holder, and will interfere with fittitng the new one.

 

2. if the engine wont start turn the screw on top of the bulb holder anti-clockwise a half turn at a time until it does.

 

3. if the car starts but you can't get it into gear - turn the screw clock-wise a half turn until you can.

Rojtatton, you're right, it is very awkward to remove the bulb...this is how far I have got this far...the red screw is loosened, and i've tried depressing the clips underneath the whole switch but nothing is happening, its not coming up

 

about the blue colour like bagpuss....if u look carefully at the pics you can see the plastic is green. I suspect this is what gives rise to the green colour....how else do non the selected gears (3,2,1 etc) appear white? there ain't another bulb.

hi sanjsanj....

 

i have just looked at the photos you linked about removing the bulb holder. if you look at photo 3, the one you named 'bit that's stuck' you can see that the whole of the black plastic 'lump' has to come off.... i did this by levering underneath it with a large screwdriver while wiggling and pullling it up with the other hand. it is pushed on very securely, but it will come off with a bit of persistence...honest!
