Mounting A Screen In The Top Centre Storage Pocket

ok, so i want to mount, an 8inch, colour touch screen monitor, in that centre pocket.

the monitor only just fits in there, with the lid closed.

when the monitor is in use, i want the pocket to be down, because i find it irritating for it to be up when driving - this rules out previous methods on here (which is to hinge the monitor from the pocket itself).

so iv had a few ideas (after lots of thinking)

1), simply hinge the monitor to the bottom front of the pocket (a very thin hinge, of correct proportions), so u can open the pocket, fold it out, close the pocket, and there u go.

Problem 1 - the monitor is too big to be folded out like this (it hits the lid half way up)

2) attach part of 2 telescopic aerials in the pocket, attaching the other end to the monitor - this allows u to "pull the monitor out of the pocket, before tilting it up - this would work, BUT

Problem 2 - there's not enough room for two telescopic aerials

3) make a double hinge effort, that attaches to the bottom front of the pocket - allowing you to "pull" the monitor out, then fold it up.

Problem - bit to technical - and the problem of "how do u make it, so the monitor doesn't flap around"

4) make yet another hinge, the bolts to the inside, right hand, wall of the pocket, fix a metal arm to it, with a M6 bolt on the end. - when u want to use the monitor, fold this arm out, take the monitor out the glove box, and attach to arm

Problem - faffing with screens etc

5) using two "runners" the sort found on ur computer desk, that allow you to slide out your key boards, using one bolt, attach one end in the back of the pocket (on the walls), and the other end, on the monitor. then make it so, u can "pull" the monitor out, then fold it up.

Problem - cant find any "runners" that fit the bill (ie, thin enough, and the right length)

6) cut out two "special" shaped bits of plastic, like this...

post-4198-1166372376.jpg

rivit one end to the screen (on the bottom, sides of the monitor), and the other end, in the pockets, with one single bolt through them, into the pockets walls. this gives the slide out, and rotate up action.

i would then have to open the monitor up - to replace its cable, with a ribbon cable, because the one it has at the moment, is a good 6 or so mm thick - which is to thick, to allow the pocket to shut.

problem - a lot of "fabrication" and it will invalidate the monitors warranty

so have you got any suggestions?

Would it not be easier to replace the rear view mirror with a combined moniter rear view mirror.

Just a thought

An example http://www.lilliputuk.com/productinfo.php?product=127

p.s. I am in no way affiliated with this site, I am sure there are hundreds of similar ones.

Mind you they do some nice stuff !

actually that example was 7 inch not 8 inch............

size doesn't matter ......does it ?

..its one idea i thought about when i was choosing a screen, and a method of controlling a computer from the captains chair. i decided against it, because of the difficulty in finding one with touch screen connection for computers, and also the road safety issue, on how the police would view a sun visor monitor?

as it is in the direct view of the driver?

an idea - not a solution - coiuld you slide the monitor out and hinge it down so it covers the vents and cup holders cutting a couple of slots in the sides of the lid to accomodate the plastic runners :o

oh yeh, i thought of that as well.

couple of problems.

hot air blowing on the monitor form the vents

makes cup holders unusable

hides part of the radio.

iv also thought about removing the cup holders, and having it come out of there, BUT it isn't feasible, after investigating that route

fair enough

just that we never have those vents working and sacrificing the cup holder use didn't seem too much of a penalty - could line the bottom up with the top of the radio :o

mmmm, its an alright idea,, but we do use the cup holders loads. in fact its unusual when there isnt a cup in the cup holders lol

mmmm wonder if it could be suspended from the ceiling, near the rear view?

mmm, pop out screen,, again looked into these, its

ok,, think im gonna do the following...

get some L shaped aluminum, cut it to the same width as the monitor, but leave 1/2 inch on each side. with each extra 1/2 an inch,, remove half the L shape, and bend the remaining bit, up to where the monitors side will be. drill a hole in the right place (this will allow you to bolt the monitor to it).

change the cable in the monitor to a flat ribbon cable.

take two 25cm long strips of flat aluminum, cut a channel down the centre, a hole at one end,, attach that to the the bent bits on the L shaped monitor cradle youve just made.

fit it into pocket, and shi-zam, all done!

dont worry, i will post pics when iv done it, all will become clear.
