Hi - newby here...

We just bought a 2001 Ghia 2.3 tip.

Anyone know how to check the Autobox levels? Manual says 'leave it to the dealer' so I assume that there's no dipstick. Is it simply a 'fill up till the oil spills out the filler plug' like a manual box?

Secondly, I have VAG-COM with a 'dumb' interface cable. Any advice before I plug it in??? Do I select 'VW Sharan chassis'?

Thanks.

Correct no dip stick but a level plug on the gear box  the reason for the dealer is because they plug the car into their version of vagcom and read the auto fluids temperature via it and then pull the level plug out! hit the search engine for more details on how to do it :D

I've done a search... maybe I'm using the wrong criteria....

I'm really sorry - can you point me towards this info...

Thanks.

That's excellent - thanks very much.

Next question (pushing my luck I know :D )

The cap and sealing plug look like a 'tamper proof' fitting - is that right? Or is this a pressure release valve? :D

Is the oil filled/topped up here?

Cheers,

El Dingo.

Your right - the red collar is a tell-tale indicator but it does prevent the plug from working loose as it is only held in place by the friction of the o-ring seals. However, I could not manage to save my old one and I think the new one from my local Fraud garage only cost 55p + VAT or something like that! (I was reckless and bought all new items, washers, plug etc). My advice is that as the sealing washers are aluminium, you can very easily reuse. The plug is reuseable, the only thing you need to buy is the oil and the red locking collar. Job only takes about 20 mins to drain and re-fill.

Hope thats of help.

Are these diagrams and procedures fit to use for an mk1 auto oil change?

I just went to my local mechanic and he said "my equipment will read everything apart from the automatic gearbox" is this true, even for the VAG-COM software you get off the internet?

He also went to say that they check the oil level with the computer and that only they can refill it. Now, i know the second part isn't true, is the first part?

Is this where you guys get your VAG-COM from? If so, which one should I get?

i bought a cheap lead (no dongle) from eBay and downloaded the free version of vag-com from rosstech. haven't played about with it too much but i know that you can access autobox fault codes.

you need to use the procedure above to check the fluid level. the box should be sealed so you will have a leak if fluid is low.

the only difference i can see with the full version is that it will enable you to do a full system scan and will produce more detailed info on the errror codes. the free version will log codes but you need to access each module (ie. engine, transmission etc) individually and the error codes are a little less detailed but with some searching online you can identify them.

mechanics are just fitters these days and can't know everything about cars that is the reason main dealers can charge so much.

i am sure those pictures are ok for mk1.

I need to ask a very simple questions the gearbox oil of Diesel Autmatic is more thick or viscous than the engine oil?

is there a filter inside gearbox also ???

also will normal ATF fluid do the same or is it a "special" oil ??

Hi there you can change the filter on the 4 speed box they have the sump at the bottom, on the five speed box the filter is behind the valve block on the side, dont go there. I was unable to find anything listed from my local supplier but did find a web site saying that Mercon and the later Mercon V are suitable for fords I also spoke to a Jatco G/Box repairer and they use Dexron 3. I used Mercon V in mine.

hi everyone this might sound really stupid but that's me lol but here goes I recently bought a 1999 galaxy 2.3 zetec auto (privately) and I've noticed that I cant seem to feel the gears changing and while on a dual carriageway I got to around 55mph and the rev counter was on 4500rpm would this mean the auto gearbox is repairable or does it mean I need to replace it ? cheers rob
