hi all, i've got a '96 v6 manual gal and tonight it's blessed me with no 3,4,5,or reverse, only 1 and 2nd and no movment in neutral any ideas? 1st and 2nd are fine (had to cover about 15 miles in 2nd! :D ) .the clutch appears to be ok as changing between 1st and 2nd is fine generally shes been fine but with the usual problems that seem to pop up one after the other!! :D

Its a cable operated gearbox. Either a cable has snapped or more likely cables have become detached - start with a visual in the gearbox area (volunteer needed to waggle the gear lever).

had a look but the cables seem ok but the one that operates 1st and 2nd (i think) moves, but the one that changes up to 3rd and 4th (i think ) seems stuck, any ideas, hopefully not a knackered box, do you think a tap on the top free it i wonder? :(

yep checked in the console around the gear lever and on the gear box, the weird thing is that the gear lever will not move left or right in neuteral it will just go back and forth into 1st and 2nd and i cant move the lever that the cable is attached to on the gearbox by hand (i just think i cant get a good grip or just too weak :( )...starting to get worried :(

With the cables disconnected at the gear box end get someone to depress the clucth pedal while you try and move the selector shaft on the gear box, and then get them to try shifting the gear lever into all the gear positions, if the gear stick moves ok with the cable's disconnected and you can see the cable's moving around at the gear box end then I would say you have a bit of a problem with the gear box :( other wise if the cables dont move and you cant move the gear stick around to all the positions required then I would say you have a bad cable! which is better than a duff gear box so here's hopeing it's that

Ok today i have managed to fix it. it appears to have been a seized selector mech and it only took me 3 hours to disassemble the area, free/relubricate the part of the mech that actually goes up and down when you go across in neutral .all seems well driven the old gal for 40 miles and no probs :( hooray! but now figured out why the reversing lights don't work so more to do

Let me guess the switch has gone? but it still works if you manually operate it when its removed from the gear box? if so look on the plunger part of the switch and you will see a groove cut into the plunger by the pin on the selector shaft!

you can do a temporary fix by removeing the pin and sticking a washer behind it to space it out more! or just replace the switch and be done with it

glad to hear your up and running again

you will need to remove the batt box & a few other odds to get to it.

But remember that the gearbox mounting bolts hold the battery tray in place so if you do remove it, the gearbox/engine will drop! so stick a jack under the gearbox first to stop it falling too far! because the bolts wont reach when you try to put it all back together otherwise! best thing on a VR6 is to remove the coil pack and stick your arm into the depths of the engine bay via the hole left by the coil pack :o

hey thanx for all the replies!! sorry for not getting back sooner (you know xmas, new year, alcohol etc) yeah i figured out the use of a jack under the 'box when doing the gear selector mech :) the prob with the reversing lights seems to be the fact that there is no connection to the switch :) as i have not really had the gal too long and that the seller told me that the lights did not work(and i got it for a silly price ) i didn't worry too much but there is no lead no nothing i've looked around the area for a wayward lead and i can see a loose cable (near the abs unit)but with a square plug (the one on the switch appears to have a round key)and it seems a little short to reach any ideas as to the colour code i would need to find/use. oh and now over a slighty frosty morning i appear to have broken to drivers door lock, barrel's ok but just goes round and round and i have to unlock from the passenger side (there was also the sound of broken bits falling to the bottom of the door when it happened :) ) i now think the saying FORD=Fix Or Repair Daily is true! trouble is ,its a great car

the plug is a four pin plug, but only two are used, the colours are Black and Black/Blue

the door lock failure is quite common IIRC there is a circlip on the end of the lock tumbler that holds in the shaft that connects the lock to the switch in the locking motor and this drops off and with it the paddle that operates the switch, I did away with the door locks when they failed and now rely on the remote locking to open the doors, to do this just order a rear door handle for that side and fit it!

thanx everyone for the help :( I've found the missing cables and i'm still in the process of refitting this and the door lock assembly but now it's developed a bit of blue smoke when hot so i just about had enough of it and i'm looking to replace it

....oh and guess what if the clutch pedel gets any lower i'ld have to get out to change gear..words now fail me...
