It does not seem to last very long before developing serious faults compared to the old type automatic boxes and the faults are usually very expensive to repair.

The faults are so common that customers with these gearboxes in Australia are taking Ford to court on the grounds that these gearboxes are not fit for purpose.

I have a 2012 2.0 tdci Titanium X which has a powershift box, it has covered only 53000 miles in the 4 years I have owned it and recently developed a fault. It would only change up into 3rd gear but would not go any further. I called Ford Assist and managed to get it back to my dealer where it had been serviced regularly and have a service plan to enable me to spread the cost of servicing. They checked it out and said that the valve body needed replacing at a cost of £1825. The gearbox had its oil and filter change at the 32000 mile service at a cost of £218 so it has had all the service that Ford recommend although I thought the price of this oil change rather excessive considering the charge for a similar oil change on a conventional automatic box.

Before going ahead with the repair I spoke with a local Automatic Gearbox Specialist to see if the charge for this valve body was normal he said it was usual as these boxes are constantly going wrong, I asked him if any manufacturer made a good automatic and he said none of the German cars are any better they all use the same type of gearbox and they all know about the problems, he went on to name a few manufacturers, Mercedes,BMW, Audi, VW, Volvo. I asked what manufacturers he would recommend he said try the Japanese. All in all I wonder if any other Galaxy owners with this gearbox have had similar problems, as it does not seem to me that this gearbox is fit for purpose, having read all the problems other owners have had with this box.

I would like to add that I am 67 and not a boy racer so my vehicle is driven well not thrashed.

Regards

Dash Board Failure

Good evening all!

1st of all, apologise if this has come up before, I'm new to this site, had a look and couldn't find any info on the problem I have.

Im currently on my 2nd ford galaxy (09)

and up until now it's been absolutely fine evenue with 330k on the clock.

recently, the entire dash board has stopped working, and so have the back lights for the radio and heater unit. Reading other forums about other vehicles I find that its very unlikely to ever get a car thats totally reliable in every way, even the Japanese stuff goes wrong. Its interesting to see if everyone still actually gets on with theirs, despite the reliability issues of certain components and if they would invest their hard earned cash in another one. But the stink is the problem as the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) recycling burn off kicks in so frequently and when it does it produces clouds of burning oil smoke from under the bonnet and the smell gets inside the car - as the wife said the other day - "Im not going to miss this one when it goes back" - which is this week thankfully. This is our 3rd Galaxy (V plate 2.3, 52 plate 2.3 and this one 2.2 Diesel) and number 4 arrives this week but this time I'm going back to good old 2.0 gasoline variety and I won't be buying another Derv variety.

You can tell when the DFP recycle is running as the fuel consumption rises whilst stationary from 0.1 gals per hour when its off upto 0.4 gals per hour when its on. The clouds of burning oil smoke billowing from under the bonnet even more noticable at night with the lights nicely illuminating the haze. Ive even had people alongside pointing at the front of the car - I guess they are worried it's going to catch fire! The stench of oil smoke also gives it away even Why does the DFP recycle need to com on when I have just driven 120 miles in approaching 2 hours on the M4 and M5 ?

Reliability has also been a big issue with this one - its the first car has actually broken down without any warning and left us at the side of a pitch black motorway since I had a Rover in the early 1990's.

Anyone else having similar smokey DPF recycling events with the 2.2?

Front Fog Lights On 06 / 130

The silver plastic cover around the front fog light has dissapeared! Had a set of brand new Sony speakers to fit having done the rear doors a few weeks ago.

The drivers door speaker has been dead for a few months but I thought it was a blown speaker as wiggling the door harness had no effect. How wrong I was

One of the speaker wires was completely snapped in half and the other was cracked with half the strands broken. But there was worse to come. I saw a thin wire hanging off having snapped at the point it entered the crimp terminal of the plug and guessed that this was why my passenger door window couldnt be controlled from the drivers door.

Then I spotted the "biggies". The main power feed for the window motor had also snapped off at the connector, must have happened as I removed the plug and pulled the boot back because the window had been working OK. The earth for the window motor also had cracked insulation but the wire was OK.

I tried to remove the pins from the plug housing but there was no way of releasing the pin from the shell :(

Luckily the two pins that had wires broken off had empty spaces adjacent to them so I could cut some of the plastic away and solder the new wire to the side of the pin.

Had one hell of a job trying to get the plug back in and the retaining ring popped off the socket with the result that socket then disappeared inside the door pillar thereby neccessitating the removal of the trim from the inside of the drivers step to put everything back together.

Finally got everything back together and I now have a working speaker, windows are OK and I can control the passenger window as well. Now I just have one more speaker to change in the front passenger door and I can then fit my new head unit and get the iPod working properly

Why oh why couldnt they use better quality wire when it is in a situation where it is constantly flexed ?????

GGGRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

Old Age And.....rust!

:( Like me, the old girl is showing inevitable signs of old age. She'll soon be 13 years old and, from a distance, the VW salesman said "it looks in exceptional condition" and so I also thought, that is, until I started the "big service/inpection/repair anything dodgy before we go on the grand trans european tour" that somehow I found myself agreeing to (long story - wont bore you but how exactly will I get 7 people and their luggage in and be comfortable?)

It started with checking the spare tyre winch.. :( what a mess.... again. This time stripped off all that useless plastic coating on the tyre holder bit , cleaned it as best I could including the main winch housing - loads of rust on the trailing arms and that bit that goes in the middle - wire brushes galore!! Then a few coats of hammerite smooth (spray) and where appropriate (body) some spray on underseal

Plastic coated steel is such a naff idea - it just cracks with age, allows water in and rusts 10 times as fast! Same story with both front and rear anti roll bars.

Off with the rear plastic wheel arch protectors to reveal yet more rust - not too much - but wish I'd done this several years ago, just a touch of sealer on those welded joints and all would have been well forever and a day. Those mounting plates for the rear suspension are very handy for your dealer/kwikfit to jack up your car - but the price you end up paying is "loads of rust", yes they are quite thick but oh, how I wished I just sprayed these every 3 or 4 years....

The worst is yet to come however - I already knew that the front suspension is typically volkswagen naff - highly thin on paint/protection. I'd already made one or two attempts at tidying it up, but once again, after removing the wheel arch liners for the first time - horror of horrors - deep seated rust for the last 3 or 4 inches of wing and its mating bodywork panel.

The reason is clear...bad design and poor protection. Those drain holes up in the scuttle area, let all sorts of stuff through and a mere 3mm pebble is all it takes to block up the tiny improvised drain down below, allowing a build up of muck and silt to build up and eat its way through the galvanising. Impossible to clean up where the panels join up - I just have to have some faith in the rust defeating properties of hammerite....

Yes, make sure you stick a large screwdriver up those bottom holes everytime you clean and flush your drains (and do it at least 4 times a year) - if only I had done this....

And finally, the grand finale......we all probably know that underseal is a bad idea - when it cracks it allows water in and there it sits and festers....

But we would have thought that the manufacturers had superior technology? Errrm......no. :)

Whats that thin line of rust on the front crossmember? The bit where some plate is welded on? The bit your garage and kwikfit use to jack up the car (when they dont feel inclined to bend your sills).

Hmmm, just ease back the body underseal......What???....bit more.....WHAT???....more and more.....WELL BLOODY HELL  ..ALMOST HALF THE CROSS MEMBERS IS RUST (the underside bit )....not yet structurally critical (they are quite thick)...but what a bloody disappointment.

And what an effort to tidy it up, knowing full well its all in vain....for once rust has got hold at this level, its just a matter of time. All I can do is slow it down a bit.

Sorry if I've bored you ( wait until you hear me going on about the new Sharan and how at first sight it looks no better that a Mk 1 (and probably no better built)

MORAL OF THIS STORY? No matter how fastidious you are, VW group cars are designed to start falling to pieces after 10 years.
