Anyone know how long it takes for the heated front screen to clear condensation etc.

I used mine last night, but it seemed to take ages.

I am assuming it is working as when I switched it on the interior/dashboard lights dimmed slightly due to the power draw. Is it mean't to work as quickly as the rear screen?

Also according to the manual they are supposed to switch off after 4 minutes.

Is this true??

Thanks.

If you use it in conjunction with the demist facilty on the aircon it should clear quite quickly, on it's own it will obviously take a bit longer. You can tell if it's working as it will clear up to a line near the edge of the screen and you will get a very definate line of mist and demisted screen.

It does switch off after a certain time but I'm not sure how long.

The heated front screen is primarily for frost on the outside not the inside

Bit like rear screen the rear screen heats quicker as the elements are on the inside.

The front screen elements are within 2 sheets of glass thus taking longer

Where are they then? Embedded in the inner or outer glass layer, or in the interlayer?

I don't know if my heated front screen works yet (and I don't particularly want a frost so that I can try it out either!)

No Ivor, he's right in terms of windscreen contruction - basically a laminate.

The Quikclear screen is for defrost AND demist.

When we select the CC to clear the windscreen, the Quikclear also comes on if needed. Without needing to press le button.

Yes - laminated screen is usually 2 layers of glass with a plastic interlayer. I was trying to find out if anyone know where the wires were - closer to the outside of the vehicle, in the middle, or closer to the inside. They must be fiendishly difficult to make!

On our Mondeo. the original Quickclear screen lost elements fairly quickly, by the time it was replaced (about 2 years old) only about half worked. The screen still cleared well-ish.

The second replacement screen (which is now about 18 months old) started with about 4 elements DOA, and about 3 or 4 more have fused since.

My previous Sharan had 2 dead elements, and had about 6 when sold (at 2 YO).

The Alhambra has 1 dead element at the moment. But the screen has hardly been used.

According to Pilkington, 10% DOA is acceptable, and they state that the elements are in the centre laminar layer...

The Mondeo screen is rated at 120W by the way - about 10A or so.

Thanks, I thought that the elements were likely to be in the middle section as this would be the easiest (least difficult?) method of construction.

Do you (or anyone else) know if Pilkington are the only glass co to make the heated front screens?

They are made by a variety of glass companies.

Sekurit, St. Gobain certainly have their names on them....

Had a frost this morning.

Heated front screen worked fine.

Also had the tick tick and turbine noise from rear heater, so I'm pleased to know that everything appears to be working!!

i found replacement screens didn't last as long.

i think that pilkington have a patent on it.

remember that it is also in 2 zones, i have had one fail at the connection to the screen due to the high current draw.

My Galaxy heated front windscreen is manufactured by Saint Gobain. Aren't all Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra windows made by them?
