Nibbles Posted September 14, 2006 Report Posted September 14, 2006 Hi Ive not long got a 98 hatchback and the middle rear seat belt wont move. Its in its tightest position and I just cant get it to budge. Its not in the belt clip. I have also looked at the double seat and cant see where it is fixed onto the frame/bodywork . Is it possible to get at the belt and slacken off or take off and replace ? I also still have a 94 saloon (that it replaced) and I am going to scrap it. ps. a crackin site that is useful Quote
anadin Posted September 14, 2006 Report Posted September 14, 2006 is this a fabric lap belt and you want to slacken it off ? Quote

I had the same seat belt problem on my old W reg mondeo, seem to remember something had broken & I couldn't fix it properly. Did you get it working? As a Southend fan I'm glad we helped you get rid of Robson! Quote

As a Southend fan I'm glad we helped you get rid of Robson!I have a S reg Mondeo 1.8 TD with the same problem, I presumed the seat belt was faulty and bought a replacement. However it seems when the rear seats are folded down the slack in the belt is taken up and the belt will not release. This means that the seat cannot be raised. I may be thick but is this a "design characteristic" or is there an adjustment I have to make to enable me to lower and raise the rear seats. By the way I am really glad I found this site. Quote

Kev, Sorry I can't remember what caused the problem with the rear seat belt. The only way I could use the rear centre seat belt was to keep it slack with a peg, otherwise it would ram itself tight on the seat and was a nightmare to try and loosen again. I'm sure it's a common problem. Quote
Nibbles Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 I finally got an hour on Sunday to have a look at the suggestions. After dodgeing the considerable showers (floods !), I eventually got down to the inertia belt unit. Unfortunately, I havent gained any play in the belt and I am not going to mess around with the unit (Ive been warned !!). Has anyone got any further thoughts / suggestions on what I may be able to do ! - apart from the get another one option... I did have a problem wth my Mk 3 Modeo rear passenger belt where I couldn't pull it out to belt one of the kiddies up. The only way in the end was to unlatch the seat back and SLAM it shut. I assumed the shock of slamming it released the inertia bearing. I dunno if this is any use but it worked every time for me. OOOh yes... I also had a problem with the middle belt on my Gal having been pulled all the way out would not retract. Again a really good hard sharp yank released it. Quote

I seem to remember twisting/pulling a cable that is attached to the mechanism & that may have gained some play back into the belt and then I put the clothes peg on the belt so it didn't go tight again. I had all the back seats out at one time, but beware it can pull itself tight and you wont be able to get the seat back together without releasing the seat belt. Quote
