hi all,

noticed on my car today 2.0 galaxy 1996 a plastic cylinder with 2 pipes fitted to it and the bottom of it has come off seems to just clip back into place but it wont stay connected i could super glue it on i reckon, what is it for ??????

it all joins to a round plastic unit, which is below and to the left of the water bottle (battery) i think it has something to do with the egr system but i dont know ?

dam hard to explain

1 pipe leads to another round plastic looking canister with a filter in the bottom of it, the other pipe goes to the egr valve (this is the one where the bottom of the canister has come off, has a rod in the centre when i press hard to try to clip it back on you can hear air being pumped

The large round unit you describe sounds like the secondary air pump? so you the part that has fallen apart does indeed sound like a valve for the erg system?

Niks photo is of the cruise control vacuum pump and is located in the n/s hollow wing cavity on the mk1 or by the radiator on the mk2 IIRC

thats exactly what it is, shall i just super glue the bottom of it on then as it just wont stay clipped on, i dont know why none of the clips are broken off, what does it exactly do ??? does it affect performance or fuel consumption ?

I think it reduces the amount of unburnt hc's in the exhaust by pulsing air into it so stops the cat being 'poisoned' allows enough oxygen for oxidation. and I think has something to do with cold starting
