Ok..another trip to the garage now im afraid...my MAF keeps working loose checked it this morn and it is practically off..the gap between the pipe and the maf is about 1cm.....(clip end bit)...

 

What affect will this have on the maf please if any????

Oh...just filled the water bottle as i had the light on..took well over 3 litres!!..didnt realise it was that big!!!!

The gap at the back?

It wont damage the MAF but.....air is going unfiltered into the engine which is not good...... and as the air is not going via the MAF you will get the sysmptoms of a duff MAF.

Use a large pair of pliers or pipe pliers to squeeze the clip ends together and slide the clip down the corrugated pipe 4 or 5 cm. Then push the pipe firmly back onto the MAF housing (about 2 - 3cm). Finally use those pliers again to pull the clip back onto the pipe/MAF joint. It only takes a few seconds to do but you do need big pliers and a bit of strength/dexterity.

it wouldn't damage the maf but it would render its readings useless if there is an air leak between the maf and main air intake. you also run the risk of any dirt/dust entering the intake.

 

you just need a new clip and maybe some locktite.

 

would be a bit worried if that is 3 litres of water/coolant you have just added - it is supposed to be a sealed system.

I had the same problem. The retaining clips had broken away. The solution i used was to wrap a cable tie around the outer case of the maf, a cable tie around the hose leading into the maf and then a final tie which threaded between the two and pulled tight. No more gap. Hope this helps if the clips are broken.

sorry should have made myself clear..was the washer bottle i filled up..oops!

 

 

as for the maf....the two screw thingies that hold it on keep working loose..been to see Keith and he cant do anything till Thurs morn..he had a quick look and he thinks that they are cross threaded that is why they are working loose.

 

I know that unfiltered air will be going through which i am not happy about.

 

Sorry was in a rush this morn..didnt make myself very clear did i.. ;)

 

 

Knew there was a prob this morn on the school run as it had no guts.

 

Hes also going to give the car a once over to make sure all is ok for the trip on sat.

ohhhhhh dear, another case of the dreaded "maf is loose in its pipe problem"

 

do what seatkid says - iv done it, easy peasey - i think i used whats called pipe pliers - i found it easier with them than any big pliers.

Two screw thingies...?

 

Do you mean those pointless torx screws that hold the MAF into the housing.?

 

I didn't even bother to replace mine because the O ring on the MAF was such a tight fit that it was a nice tight push fit. If yours is coming loose, first question is..'Does yours have an O ring fitted?'

 

If it has - good! I still cannot understand it coming loose but try a couple of short round headed wood screws - something like a 3/4 8 or a 1" 8 or, ultimately, a 1 1/4" 8.

 

For some reason, round headed wood screws seem to be measured in old money but something like 2, 2.5 or 3 cm by 4.5 or 5mm. (Those bl00dy foreigners have got a lot to answer for!)

 

About the water...

 

I had the same problem and it caused a sudden loss of oomph.

 

Funny thing, after adding about 3 litres, it has done about 7-8 k miles and not lost a drop.

 

It's a funny old world.

You said the MAF was loose at the clip end (pipe) - now you're talking about the airbox end with the 2 Allen head bolts?

 

BTW the bolts would be impossibly tight if they were crossthreaded.

 

And yes, you need to check that O ring is there if it is the air box end....

 

And the two bolts should never come undone on their own - has someone fitted some wrong bolts?

 

Or have you fitted them from the front? They fit from the back you know (see pic below)

 

Sounds as if I need to post some more pics....tomorrow..... :P

surely if it was the airbox it should have minimum effect on engine management, I could see this if it was the back (clip) end as per SK & Mumof4 original posts

Well...A good evening ended disastrously..

 

Maf..loose at both ends...screws wont stay in......i havent replaced the screws at all and yes fitted right way...pushed maf back on to pipe end......discovered that my O ring is missing from other end...it was there...i know it was.now its not.vanished.gone.poof.i am assumeing that it was not put back when serviced.....

I think ;)

 

1 - either the threads have been destroyed - by sum mindless handy andy - however the material is strong!

2 - the screws used are too small - and so work free

3 - mum of 4 is imagining things

4 - are you sure its the Screw part thats coming out - or where the head of the screw is?

5 - if the screws are in correctly - the o ring should make no diffrence to if it stays in or not - would just be a poor seal.

even if the screws come a bit loose surely the pipe clip would stay on the other end, apparently it was hard enough to refit when changed

Had it..had enough...all i wanted to know was the effect it would have on the maf...im tired..witnessed a crash..given statements till im blue in the face....imagining??????...i f****** wish......

ok - replace clip, O ring, and screws - with new and correct ones.

 

is that a simple answer or not

 

MumOf4 - when tightening the screws - do they feel tight - or as if there not gripping? (threaded)

Don't bloody kids get on your tits!! Shouldn't he be in bed by now!! He'll be all grumpy in the morning!!

 

If you don't have the correct tool you can't tighten the screws properly - it could just be that.

I have the correct tool..i had it when i fitted the maf when i first did it..and i never had a problem with the screws coming loose till that bloody service.

 

Neil can vouch for that as he helped me fit it.

if its disconnected between the MAF and the airfilter - then the MAF will get more than usual dirrt on it (reducing its life), and that dirt will get into the engine (BAD). If its after the MAF - then u will get poor power - and dirrt in the engine (but the MAF will be "OK").

It depends where the problem is - If the screws are so loose that air is sucked in at that point it might well make the ECu think that there is insufficient fuel and richen the mixture - Basically if the nuts/clamps are loose then tighten them!!

Probably none but extended driving will get the element dirty - might need careful wipebut for a short time I expect it would be alright. Older style hot wire type would be more sensitive to dirt I would think

Thank you.Is all i wanted to know ;) .I am having it fixed on Thursday morning as i dont have the time to do it myself.Besides....keith will be able to fix it quicker than me.

btw they are bolts....not screws

 

May I make the following observations? (Ignore them if u want but I think I would ask myself how this situation arose...)

 

1. You dont remove the MAF for servicing. Even for changing the air filter.

 

2. That back clip, once fitted correctly will never come off by itself.

 

3. Anyone who says bolts that are crossthreaded can come loose is not a very good mechanic. (IMO it would be impossible to crossthread the correct bolt in the MAF flangemount anyway)

 

4. The O ring may still be in the airbox pipe end, it tends to stay in there when the maf is removed - check.

Its impossible for the O ring to fall out/disappear unless either the bolts fall out too or it wasn't there in the first place.
