I started using a Galaxy for my tow car this year after using a Citroen Xantia for the last 3 years. The Galaxy makes a good tow car, I thaught I would miss the Citroens self leveling suspension but this was not a problem, apart from the drop in performance I could not feel the caravan behind me at all.

we just got back from spain...

1.9TDI automatic X reg MKII zetec galaxy

and a coachman VIP 2001 460/2 (1350KG loaded)

it performed well, and was able to keep up with the leader, doing 70mph.

What was your fuel consumption at those speeds?

here we go yet another TDI mpg question :) any chance we can get a few of these topics on TDI MPG pasted into the FAQ? ;)

Posted

we got 27.5MPG on average.

you could do better if you went slower - 70 is racing it a bit.

Hopefully that wasn't in Spain or the UK .....

I thought you could only do 50/60mph towing a caravan..isnt 70mph illegal and also dangerous towing????

Not illegal in France.

Any vehicle towing with a maximum combined weight of up to 3.5 tonnes can go 110kmh (about 68 mph) on motorways.

Not illegal, but wholely unsafe and unthoughtful towards your own passengers and other road users to be doing those kinds of speeds waving a 1.5 tonne brick behind you IMO!! Especially if MJR was driving with his limited driving experience due to his age.

here we go again,,, pick on the young.

yes, it was in France - where it is Legal.

And in mine and my dads opinion(fully qualified instructor for over 40 Years, and keen caravanner for many years), we were safe to tow at 70 - the rig was rock solid - if it had been all over the place then i would have slowed.

EVERY driver who has seen me drive - INCLUDING all those on the rally, commented on what an excellent driver i am.

and to be told towing at 70 is "illegal and also dangerous" by someone who drove a galaxy with a known steering fault at 70 defies belief.

ouch , thats a bit below the belt mj, yes we all assumed you meant u.k, ive no doubt your a competent driver, it may not be illegal but 70 is a max speed limit , its easy to get into keep up syndrome in a convoy but what the rush, its a holiday, take it easy, :o remember its the other idiots  when you have kids you'll be saying the same, :D ;)

i did exaclty what u said matey.

the leader was reaching speeds of 75 80 - which i refused to do.

70 was absolute max, and i had satnav on incase we lost the leader.

just one question then Matt, and answer this honestly.

If you were to either get a front blow out or hit a patch of oil while towing a 1.3 tonne caravan travelling at 70 mph, on the wrong side of the road, in a foreign country, in a (minimum) 1.4 tonne vehicle that isnt known for its great road holding at speed, with other members of your family inside, would you be 100% certain you'd be able to fully control the vehicle and caravan without hitting any other vehicles or jack-knifing or rolling the whole rig across the central reservation?

I doubt it. It's not about your age (mainly) its about your driving experience. You will have had a maximum of 2 years driving without supervision (give or take) on UK roads and maybe a months total driving experience on foreign roads. In my opinion for what its worth (a driver of almost 15 years who has only ever crashed once due to tyre failure), if you were towing the van at 70 mph, whether legal to do so or not, you were driving irresponsibly. Thankfully, you arrived safely home, even though you were quite proud of beating your dads record, indicating that there were possibly even more speeding infringements along the way.

Whether other people and especially you think you're a good driver, you arent as good as you think you are. Dont become another statistic to keep up with the leader or get home in record time. There are enough idiots on the road, without there being another one towing a caravan.

I have not broken any laws, not in the UK, france, or spain. - only reason i beat my dad was because of my timing with the ferry - again u asume iv done wrong.

Yes, a blow out would have placed us in shit creak, and i would have dealt with it the best i could - i have a hard shoulder to my right, and a lane which remains empty most of the time, to my left.

i did say absulute MAX of 70 - in other words, speeds ranged from 45 to 70, and usually around 64. this is due to hills, and the leader not maintaining a constant speed - which i like to do when towing - in england, my needle gets to 60 and it stays there.

ALL tyres were replaced on the galaxy & van a few months before we set-off - ALL tyres were in tip top condition, ALL tyres were checked at every possible solt, for everything, nails, cracks, pressures.

this is my final post on the subject, good day.

what an excellent driver i am.

I would have thought that a modesty in your own abilities was vital in anyone believing themself to be an "Excellent Driver".

Not necessarily - as some of you may have read on my posting about crappy Avon tyres, I did have a blowout on my caravan at around 60 mph, and, apart from the bits of Avon depositing themselves on the road, there was no drama whatsoever, and I was able to signal left, pull over and stop in a completely controlled way.

My caravan weighs in at 1.3 tonnes, and the Alhambra is nearly 2 tonnes (not 1.4 as someone said, and it holds the road pretty well too), which makes it a very stable outfit, especially when the caravan has telescopic dampers and there is a stabiliser between the car and caravan. There really is a lot of ignorance about just how stable and safe properly matched outfits can be. Almost invariably, jack-knifed or rolled caravans are a result of poor matching or loading and / or incompetent driving.

By the way, I have been driving and towing for considerably longer than 2 years, but that does not necessarily prove anything - I know many competent drivers who have little experience, although I guess that they may improve further with experience, just as I know some pretty incompetent drivers of many years' standing. Just because some people do not have the competence to control a car in an emergency situation (for example, when a tyre blows), does not mean that no-one else does.

ok..enough is enough...thread closed...this has deviated way off topic and Nikpv is right...

no matter how long a person has been driving/towing..or how old they are...we all always have something new to learn on the roads..none of us are perfect....Mattjr is capable..if not his dad wouldnt let him drive..Experiance makes us better drivers, and i know i still have a lot to learn
