when I get in my car, before switching the ignition on I can hear an electric pump running. When you lift the bonnet it seems to be coming from around the fuel filter area. You can still hear it when you turn the engine off.

I'm guessing its a diesel lift pump, am I right?

it never used to do it on my mk1. but this newer one has the pd engine, I was led to believe its crucial that there is fuel at the high pressure pump at all times or it will get damaged.

Mk1 TDI (-2001) don't have an electric fuel pump, it relies on the distributor pump to "suck" the fuel.

MkII PD (2001+) have an electric fuel pump to supply the PD injectors (at low pressure). IIRC the pump is located in the fuel tank (immersed) as in the petrol models. The "hissing/whirring" sound will be heard briefly as you turn on the ignition as it primes the system.

Ha!

At last One I can get right!! This time it IS the electric run on pump that is fitted to the PD diesels to keep the coolant circulating (to stop hot spots apparently).

It runs for s few minutes after the engine has stopped. Mine went after 90k miles. There are variosu posts on the subject.

It starts up as soon as the car unlocks, even when the engine is cold.

interesting - there has been some speculation that the glowplugs fire up when the door is opened, could be part of the same thing but can't say I've ever heard anything

wonder if a faulty temp sensor would get the after run pump going even if the engine was cold ???????????
