Hi all, I've just bought a Gal, a 1.9TDi (115) Auto 2001. The 1st time I drove it was a trip to London, M1, M25 etc. Lovely to drive at 1st but after 60 miles it started to slow down on inclines. I wasn't too bothered as I don't expect formula 1 with a diesel, but when I got onto the M25 the speed dropped to 25mph on the inclines, which ain't steep, (I know, I know that's fast for the M25 ha ha!). HGVs and others, including a couple of Gals passed me by. Is this level of performance normal for this model? If not, any idea what could be wrong? It drives not too bad around town, not brilliant, but ok.

I'm going to take it back to the Frauds dealer I bought it from to get them to check it out under warranty. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds as if it might be a well known problem with the Mass Air Flow Meter. See http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...=air+flow+meter

hi and welcome , when it loses power try switching off engine then restarting , if its slipping into limp mode, this will reset the fault temporarily, re; fault , first check all vacuum hoses that you can get to, for leaks, could also be your maf sensor, but if its under warranty let them sort it :D

 snap :D

Thanks anadin & PhilT, really useful info, including the link to the MAF strip-out. I think I'll disconnect the MAF and see how it runs. At least I'll be able to 'help' the Fraud dealer with his diagnosis. I'll let you know how it goes. By the way, how I put my Gals details (2001 Galaxy 1.9Tdi (115ps) Auto 37k) at the bottom of the posts like others have done, is it in the My Controls section?

yeah go into my controls .........then on personal profile ........click edit signature then write what u want

Might be a turbo problem,,,,,,,check all your hoses around the turbo,,,,,,,,

Did you get some kind of warranty when you purchased it ,,,,,,,,,,maybe you could get it repaired under warranty

if I was a betting man then dime to dollars on the maf given age of car

from my experience if you diagnose the fault they will just ignore you and fit something else instead!

went through a hego valve and idle speed control valve on my escort before they said "its your throttle position sensor sir" which I had asked them to check first of all.

Dear all

I disconnected the MAF for the journey home and, hey presto! mucho power. Into the dealers with it, and they say, yeh bring it in to be sorted under warranty. So thanks for the help. Only thing is it's not getting fixed until the 19th Sept, so, is it OK to leave the naff MAF disconnected until then? Will it harm? Cheers!

Its the MAF.

But then again..its only done 37k miles...........hmmmmmm

I reckon the thick film sensors degrade over time anyway, the more miles done the quicker the degradation process, this is only from my observations here where people give age and mileage

Yes....2001 is right...but all others IIRC had done around 50k miles?..so isnt 37k miles abit early even though the age fits?

Although I have nothing to benchmark it against both my Gals seem to have working MAF's.

Thye are lively give good mileage and still beat the odd boy racer away from the lights (they then piss all over me !)

So maybe it's just down to conditions.

WHo knows!!

Is there any way of cleaning the MAF to revive it (assuming that it's clogged)? I saw something on the net about cleaning a MAF on a ford scorpio with injector/carb cleaner spray or isopropyl alcohol.

You can try, but from experiences posted on this forum, it rarely works and the one or two that said it did said the effect was temporary. The difference is that Galaxy MAFs use hot film technology and Scorpio use (old fashioned) hot wire technology.

To clean the MAF sensor, remove the sensor head from the MAF housing (i.e. from the side via 2 security torx screws)

when I changed the maf it looked pristine and a swipe with IPA covered cotton bud had no effect (or any dirt) - it was not dirty or clogged different technology as SK has said

Is the loss of power associated with the MAF always dramatic? Mine has a definate but subtle loss of power - It is not as lively as it once was on acceleration, and top speed is around 90-95. It seems to have "lost it's edge".

I've tried disconnecting the MAF and it runs like a pig, so at the time I assumed the MAF was ok.

The car has done 85000 miles, and is over 6 years old. (115 psi TDi).

Should I change the MAF or look at other causes?

car details would be helpful but to answer your question - I had exactly that, subtle loss of power first noticed on inclines, disconnected the MAF - got overtaken by cyclist on hill well almost :) , replaced the MAF - whee........ ;) :) goes well now, there was a post where I gave some time trials but I can't find it at the moment.

oh here it is

I see in the two posts in the stickies on changing MAFs, one changes the whole casing and the other changes the cartridge that fits in the casing. Can you buy either and which do you normally change?
