Focus 1.6 Zetec 2002 - Engine Hunting

Hi,

Mrs has a 2002 1.6 zetec focus thats done 29k miles and every now and then the engine 'hunts' on tickover, up & down from 700 to 1500 rpm.

 

Any ideas ?

IIRC there was a resonance problem with this engine that caused hunting and variable tick over rates! we had one once as a curtesy car that did the same thing :D the mechanic said that the fix was a replacement intake manifold!

Idel speed control valve.

 

Had the same on a 1.8 zetec engine in my escort

had a few of them go on my older fords

 

made the reves go mad when the engine was cold <_<
