Shocked to hear the news this morning. One of lifes great characters, at least he went in a fitting way. We all loved watching his shows in our house. Certinaly a very knowledgable and caring person that should have been around a lot longer. (Mad as a box of frogs though!)

The world will be a quieter place with such a character missing from the media.

What superb example he was to all of us with his love of all things that live.

What a great guy, brought great entertainment and a real understanding of nature to many. However I have kids and would not have taken the risks that he took in his life, knowing that he had dependants. Your priorities in life change dramatically as most of us know. One step too close to nature. He will be sadly missed by many.

its sad to hear he has died, as said, he was a great character. however, if you mess with animals, its only a matter of time before one of them gets you.

Great shame.

But we all know he courted disaster regularly. Did he get too close this time?

I feel for his family.

Amazing entertainer - irritating git - but such enthusiasm and verve for life. Apparently he upset a stingray whcih stung him in the heart and couldn't be saved.

He will be missed - not least by his family.

What a shame - it only leaves Kylie and Rolf now!

I am not criticising this thread but don't you think it's strange how people start/contribute to a thread about a bloke that lived on the other side of the world being killed.

Meantime at the same time the death of 14 servicemen who are "fighting" for the countries freedom and peace become totally overlooked.

Personally I couldn't give two hoots for Irwin but I do about those servicemens families.

Have we become so accustomed to hearing the war losses that they mean so little now?

It seems to have become like Northern Ireland was a while back, on the front page of the Sun,

"Grant Mitchell to leave Eastenders, then tucked away on page 5 " 2 killed in bomb blast"

As I said, don't want to ctiticise(each to his own) I just thought it was a bit strange.

When the news broke that 14 service personnel had died...first thoughts were untill we knew different, that the plane came from this camp which meant that i would have known some of the widows...as such i never post anything about deaths of service personnel as i have been close to it when a herc did go down last year and 3 of the personnel killed were from this camp. One of the widows is my friend.

My thoughts and everyones in the forces are with the familes of the service personnel who died.there will be a day of mourning on the camps and bases,it is hard for the base where the personnel came from to cope with the grief, the accusations, and the anger from the families left behind.

Do not think that because i have mentioned nothing of it that i dont care,

Sometimes the first we know of anything going on is from the news, like when my other half was in Afghan nearly 2 years ago..the news told me more tan the people on camp..for 8 weeks i didnt know where he was untill i caught a glimpse of him on the telly.

There is an online book of condolences that you can sign (there was last year).

I think people react more to a celebrity death a lot more than they do a service death as mostly we are never in the spotloight and to be honest a lot of people dont care when a setrvice personnel is killed/dies as they think what does it matter???i never knew them???

But a celebrity is in their face all the time.

A lot of what we do is not up for public discussion, where the troops are deployed you can see but not all the time..you cant see the conditions they have to live in whilst deployed..all looks glamourous on the telly. but believe me, the average service personnel loses at least 2 stone in weight whilst deployed.

I know the service...i was born into it and married into it..i have never known any different...you do not have to vocalise or write things down to sympathise..what you can do is donate to the benevolent fund which helps thise left behind amongst others. They do a lot more than what you know. And the need for funds is always constant..especially in this day.

Greg

I have a colleague who is currently "fighting" in Afghanistan, the required "fighting" is to try and hide while looking for the enemy as we are not allowed to fight back unless an engagement order is passed.

Not fair and we are losing some really unnec people to this war, but we can only grieve over those we can relate to and many people can relate to the natural way in which Steve carried out his natural role where as very few of us can share the grief of the familes of servicemen killed in totally foreign country carrying out some really strange actions.

Agree its a little biased but if there were a few on this forum who new people in the services in active areas then it would probably take a different flavour altogether.

Still sorry for his family and all the families of the servicemen who have given their lives to keep us safe.

Totally agree with the sentiments Greg, but the thread was started as it was such an unexpected piece of sad news. The death of 14 British Servicemen is very very tragic but not unexpected in a wartime scenario. As well as the country mourning their deaths at the time, and having ultimate sympathy for their loved ones, the majority fall silent for 2 miutes once a year to commemorate them and lay thanks for the freedom with which we all enjoy, all thanks to the brave people that have died trying to keep it for us.

I'm sure that if a thread had been started to pay respects to the 14 servicemen, it would have recived just as much, if not more of a response than this one.

M04 and Neil, totally agree with all the comments.

I realise that everyone cares about the servicemens families and to be honest perhaps it would be a bit heavy if every time servicemen died a post went up to state so.

Just thought I would post my view.

Don't get me started on the 2 minute silence as it will turn into a rant then.

I agree with Greg - I am saddened by Steve Irwins death - but I am totally outraged at the pathetic coverage given to the deaths of our servicemen - whenever it is announced it is used as an excuse to re hash "should we shouldn't we" debate - they never show any real respect.

The media in the country stinks.

one of my step sons was related to one of the crew of the first british helicopter that was lost, it relly brings things home to you about our brave troops in the front line,

i think one of the reasons that these deaths are not posted about on public forum is that you dont know straight away who has been killed and if you did how can you be sure their families never use what ever forum it may have been posted on, and if something is misquoted in that post, there could be allsorts of backlash, as some people may say the wrong thing just voicing there opinion,

this is not usually the case with celebrities in my opinion, im not saying anyone is wrong in what they have written in their posts we each have our own views,

my thoughts are with steves family, i think he was a bloody good bloke,

but every time a service man or woman, american or british is killed my thoughts go out to their families too ,i just dont tend to voice it on forums ,

i remeber when the first of our soldiers was killed and flown home they had a service for them as they unloaded the bodies and i sat watchin it live on tv in tears, it gets me every time, even on the anniversary of 9/11 it has me in tears at some point through the remebrance service,

i for one get so sad reading and hearing about neeedless loss of life,

thanx Baz

Steve Irwin rest in peace you were a top bloke
