sanjsanj Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 I've lost track of whcih intel chip set is superior than the other and i was wondering whether you could help.... all i can remember is the Intel Pentium IIntel Pentium IIIntel Pentium IIIIntel Pentium IVafter these, there have been many processors released and i dont know which is which....can anyone put these in order?: oldest to newest? Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor Intel CoreDuo processors Intel Xeon processors Intel Pentium M processorsIntel Celeron M processors Intel Celeron processors Quote
seatkid Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006  It don't work that way, there are hundreds of processor types and variants (please dont confuse them with chipsets which is a totally different thing - or dozens of things) Processors come in many varieties, depending on base architecture, packaging, speed, power, and markets - e.g. desktops, notebooks,PDAs, servers to name but a few. All you need to know is the most powerful processor to date is the i4004... :D Quote
sanjsanj Posted September 2, 2006 Author Report Posted September 2, 2006 so whats the point of all that labelling? you know, on your laptops and computers...intel celeron, intel pentium?if it only matters about speed and power why do the companies label the computers with whichever processor it has? Guest MATT jr Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 i was rencently told by a pc world assitant - as i asked whats the diffrence between a celeron and pentium - that the diffrent ones are slightly better at diffrent things. ie, the intel celeron M - is good for mobile use, with less demanding programs.as an intel centrino duo - is not as good for mobile use, as it uses more power - but can run more demanding programs/multitask not my words - pc worlds! seatkid Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 "Celeron" is a low end version of a "Pentium" (could be II,III or IV) - cut down (or crippled even) on [computing] power and targeted at the "cheap" end. And Pentium M or Celeron M are "mobile" versions of their non-M cousins with laptop/notebook tweaks (low power [W], special standby features, packaging) But the confusion comes in as "Pentium M" can cover a whole range of CPU chips which are radically different. Intel use names purely for marketing purposes nowadays , and you need to look at the processor type numbering to home in on the actual design/stepping etc. There is no such thing as an intel centrino duo processor. The centrino bit refers to a mobile (notebook) chipset that supports integral wireless networking. The duo refers to the core 2 duo processor architecture recently launched by Intel - which ironically has its roots in Pentium III architecture rather than Pentium IV architecture [Netburst] which is now widely acknowledged as a dead end street. All in all - [intel] marketing has completely confused the consumer, made worse by false or misleading labelling by some computer manufacturers. And don't believe the Intel ads, a Centrino based laptop cannot be used as a hoverboard..... P.S. i was of course joking about the i4004, we all know that the i8080A is the most powerful cpu around... :D Quote
sanjsanj Posted September 4, 2006 Author Report Posted September 4, 2006 ok, so what specs should i look at in a processor/cpu? Quote
seatkid Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 ok, so what specs should i look at in a processor/cpu?You must be joking! Try looking here or on a million other computer sites to make an informed decision. Quote
sanjsanj Posted September 4, 2006 Author Report Posted September 4, 2006 too complicated for me!so when i'm shopping around for computers, the main thing that you have to compare is how efficiently it can do work.....how can i do that? Quote
mumof4 Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 ask the salesman.search the web sanj..thats what most of us do...go to diff sites and compare. the only way you will know for yourself on any subject is to search the web..that is what most of us do on here..its the only way to learn..i do it..i sit for hours sometimes looking for the info i need. Sanj..you have to search for yourself rather than expecting immediate answers from us as to what is best .You may think im being hard..but it is the only way you will learn. If i have a prob with the car i will search first...that is what the many thousands of posts are on here for..to search through. If i cant find the answer i need..then i will ask. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 Use your "INTELligence" and work it out. :D What do you want it to do? :16: Play gamesSurf the webWord procesingApplications Or if as seems most likley just for sodding about on- then buy a package , Dell, HP etc etc etc ;) Quote
greg_68 Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 sanjsanj These sites may help you out, I know what you mean pc's are bewildering and knowing the question you want to ask is half the problem. http://computer.howstuffworks.com/ for how the components work http://www.computerforum.com/ Instead of asking mechanics advice on pc's why not give a pc experts forum a try. You wouldn't go on a pc forum and ask them how to fix your Galaxy would you? ;) Or a lot of the selling internet sites sometimes have a buying guide "what to look for" page. Quote
