I'm currently without my Gal because she is in the garage due to a rattley / clattery kind of engine noise.

At the end of a 90min run the car sounded like the tappets were going to come through the top of the engine.

Went to garage number 1 (doesnt normally deal with Galaxys) but suggested the hydraulic tappets could be the culprit.

Went to garage number 2 they said tappets ok but could be timing belt tensioner.

Went to garage number 3 (Diesel expert), on start up suggested tappets.

They did an oil pressure test, come back fine, looked at the hydraulic tappets, one seemed 'loose' but ok! They then got somebody to take a look at the injectors (3 manual 1 electronic, i think thats what they said), they took them out, gave them a 'blast'( i presume he meant a clean) and put them back in.

The car now sounds fine but the mechanic doesnt seem to think he's done anything to fix the problem and doesnt want to let it go until he's sure things are ok

Anybody any ideas or suggestions ?

Could it have been the injectors ?

Could the tappets have been 'iffey' and having a play has sorted them ?

Am coming around to the idea that it is time to get rid of the old GAL, some of the problems that are now happening are getting beyond my knowledge.

;) ;) ;)

hi have you been running on veg oil if so after a while the injectors will gum up and cause the same symptems

Let me guess...

It was something loose on or near the engine and they "fixed" it....

I once started stripping out an engine bay for a mysterious rattle only to find out it was an empty coke can in one of the drinks holders...(seriously)

Thanks for the replies.

As for the veggie oil, i have been toying with the idea but have currently only run on bog standard diesel.

The noise was defo from the engine, did sound like the top end, under the top rocker cover.

I hate rattles in the car, drive me nuts.

Anyway, i now have the car back, got the timing belt changed at the same time.

it could have been one of 3 things, hydro lifters, injectors or timing belt stuff as this is all thats been worked on.

Took a peak under the bonnet today as there was a wooshing noise. Seems they didnt put the air box back properly. Fixed that and noise is now ok however i did find a mirror wedged in the engine compartment, on the right hand side under all the pipes and stuff ????? will try and get that out tomorrow.

Garage also ripped off the top engine cover and cracked it. I was going to make a fuss but considering what they charged me and what they have done i'll keep that to myself.

Currently have a running car. Yippee. aircon and all.
