Guest K Matters Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 My Galaxy Driver's seat belt is worn out in less than 12 months from new. Culprit is the plastic insert with very sharp edges, in the metal loop at top of door pillar, which the belt passes through. Atrocious design! No need for any plastic insert, most cars just have a solid metal loop. The belt is badly frayed on both edges. Ford dealer has just replaced the front 2 seat belts FOC under warranty, but obviously the same thing will keep happening. Ford ought to recall them all. Anyone else had theirs replaced ? Quote

Do you have the height of the seatbelt set appropriately? Just a thought. 89000 miles/3yrs on mine and belts still as new/un-frayed. Or have they changed the seatbelt on the last facelift of Mk2's? tim-spam Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Nothing wrong with mine - 2001 with 80000 miles on the clock. Quote
NikpV Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 same here - is the plastic clip above locked in place so it doesn't rub Quote
strouf Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 My car is still very new to tell, but... I think that the 2nd row seat belts are fittet the wrong way. See, the metal buckle that latches to the seat side (slightly inclined ) is facing upwards. So when in place , it is inclined the wrong way , not towards the pillar and the door. Is this how yours is fitted ? Quote
NikpV Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 I cant see how the belt can be worn by the clip unless its not in correctly or they have changed the design - op may be able to comment - see picture below PS:- removing the clip makes it really easy to untwist a belt which one of the darlings in the middle row has managed - Houdini like to get twisted and knotted I think that the 2nd row seat belts are fittet the wrong way. have you tried to put them in the other way - its very difficult - picture is a view of the passenger side seat belt clip viewed from the rear right - difficult to show Quote
strouf Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 have you tried to put them in the other way - its very difficult - picture is a view of the passenger side seat belt clip viewed from the rear right - difficult to show I guess you cant clip the belt with the buckle facing in or out, in your picture it looks as the belt is twisted... So, when resting by the pilar, does the seat belt buckle face upwards ? O.K. looking a bit more closely now, this is how my belt would look when in place..Note that the buckle is biased towards the inside of the car. Shouldn't it be the other way round ? Quote
NikpV Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 no its not twisted - had to arrange it like that otherwise you wouldn't be able to see which way its tilted :D will check how it hangs when retracted on the pillar  Quote
Guest K Matters Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 I cant see how the belt can be worn by the clip unless its not in correctly or they have changed the design - op may be able to comment - see picture below Hi, The belt is frayed by the plastic piece which is fitted all the way around the outside of the metal loop. (Not by the plastic cover over the bolt). The plastic piece is not firmly fixed to the metal loop, it can move sideways relative to the metal loop, (i.e. nearer to the door pillar or further away). When it is nearer to the door pillar, the sharp edge of the plastic piece rubs on the belt when is being worn, due to continual slight movements of the driver. I suppose it is conceivable i might be blaming the plastic piece erroneously, but it is sharp along its edges. The only other explanation, if the belt doesn't touch the plastic piece, would be that the surface of the metal loop was rough on the belts on our car. Quote

So, when resting by the pilar, does the seat belt buckle face upwards ? hmm never noticed before but it 'hangs' pointing up !! The plastic piece is not firmly fixed to the metal loop, it can move sideways relative to the metal loop firmly fixed on ours although the metals ring on the back has rather a sharp edge - doesn't seen to wear ours though  Quote
