wood73 Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 hi my wife went shopping today and all was fine when she came back to the gal and started it there was a major topend rattling noise.oil level is fine cant see any obvious problems i.e. alt belt.the noise is accompanied by a misfire.it sound like its coming from the rear left of the engine but cant be sure.any ideas????thanks in advance Quote
wood73 Posted August 30, 2006 Author Report Posted August 30, 2006 is it possible for the top chain to jump a tooth on the cam?? Quote
sepulchrave Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 If you've been very unlucky then the camchain tensioner has disintegrated and the timing has slipped possibly nipping a valve, you don't mention mileage but camchain problems can occur with high mileage/abused VR6's and it's very expensive to put right! anadin Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 is it possible for the top chain to jump a tooth on the cam?? not up on the chains but on the belt the crankshaft pully can come loose causing a jump, this would cause poor starting and running, eventual breakage of the belt, definatly sounds like timing out tho Quote
wood73 Posted September 3, 2006 Author Report Posted September 3, 2006 I have removed the rocker cover and found the tensioner bolt had failed!the cams had jumped, so I have retimed the engine and fiited a new tensioner bolt, refitted everything and the car runs, but there is an intermittent miss on low revs. not sure if it is a valve as i thought it would miss all the time on low revs.the chain was initially silent but after about an hour of running the rattle started to reappear.any ideas?? Quote
anadin Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 hi, re-check timing ,you only need to be a tooth out to give probs, other than that i would think a valve Quote
djx Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 there a vr6 engine still cheap on ebay at the mo, you may want to keep an eye on it mate Quote
sepulchrave Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 You may have nipped a valve if there is a slight misfire, but more likely your HT leads/Coil are misbehaving after being dismantled to get the cam cover off, if it's rattling again you probably need a new tensioner assembly unless the bolt you fitted wasn't hi-tensile! wood73 Posted September 5, 2006 Author Report Posted September 5, 2006 thanks for the advice, am looking at another engine on ebay, hopefully back on the road within a week. Quote
